It seems that four galactic races, one of which is us humans, made a terrible mess of the Galaxy during one of our wacky interstellar wars. Between nukes and bio weapons, we were in danger of wiping out all life on the planets around us--but luckily for everybody, the saucer people were watching and waiting to spank us when things got out of hand. As is standard in real-time gaming these days, Gene Wars consists of base building and combat. For an added twist, players can extend their will across a planet through the use of Specialists. These nutty volunteers come in four varieties: the Engineer, who builds your structures; the Geneticist, who studies new life forms so you may reproduce them, and also heals anything that lives; the Botanist, whose job it is to gather rare seeds and plant them again at your discretion; and the Ranger, who tends your living animals, encouraging them to fight, feed, or fool around (reproduce).

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/dawnofwar/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

 From the Developer's web site:

Your character choices are: a jetpack-loving British-ish alien, a semi-mermaid sorceress/archer, or an incredibly huge roaring monster that eats everything. All of them are a lot of fun and you play as each during the game's campaign.

Gameplay is usually third-person shooting, but there's also resource collection, base-building, and even some vehicle races.

The most unusual thing about Giants is that it tries to be funny - and is funny! Don't skip the cut-scenes on this one.

Multiplayer supports large games with different modes. The most common is base vs base where each team tries to collect the most resources (brainy smarties) and destroy the enemy teams's base before it can be rebuilt. Resources are spent on buildings for weapon upgrades, base defense, and vehicle production. One player can be the giant Kabuto who's almost impossible to take down.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/Ccmmandandconquerra2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

This game is one of the best entries on the Command and conquer universe yet.

The game isn't a direct entry on the series, but rather a spin off based on the cold war between US and Russia coupled with a sci fi twist.

The game introduces funny characters that make a lot of funny moments while you're playing it. You'll meet megalomaniac Yuri, the heroic Tanya, the goofy Romanov and the very standard president of the United States, along with a very funny set of other characters.

The game is standard RTS gameplay on steroids(for its time anyway), it's fast paced, and although the strategy involves often more brute force than the strategy part, the action and the range of things you can do more than make up for it.

You can start by selecting your outfit, the allies or the soviets, who in this game are a super power taking over the world thanks to psychological technology developer by Yuri.

Depending on the side you take, you'll have a select army very balanced against your enemy, with the Russians being strong with units like specialized tanks, soldiers and general ground forces whereas the allies have strong air forces and other bonuses.

The game has a high and addictive fun factor, which means that if you're in college or have to work early in the morning it's not recommendable to set your hands in this game as you'll easily see yourself playing up to 8 hours of it. It's simply that good, so if you happen to not have played it and you have a copy nearby, fret not and pick it up. It'll make your time worth it.

Knight Shift

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/knightshift/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

 Story

In a distant land, long, long ago there once lived a prince, he was righteous and just, noble and honourable by nature and above all evil. Dark and treacherous powers joined together to spread evil over the land and to banish the prince from the principality and the thoughts of the people. Then because of an unsuccessful spell from the despicable lords the prince was banished to another dimension, but not from the memory and hearts of the people. Some years later, through the opening of a portal between dimensions by a good hearted magician, the prince was able to return to his principality. The task then was to drive out the evil lords from power and to allow peace and order to return. A bitter fight against the powers of evil is now imminent...
Gameplay

The Single Player RTS part of the game consists of three addictive, story driven campaigns. Each of them takes place in a different geographical area and bounds you every minute with new challenges like rescuing a kidnapped Princess or fighting a ferocious Dragon - or combat with nasty, ugly, smelly monsters and the bones of the walking dead. During the campaigns the player develops his characters and gains access to new weapons, special armour and magic items. He also has the possibility of creating new characters or building new structures. Additionally, an extensive RPG mode surprises with an even larger selection of maps, quests, weapons and enemies, plus a highly improved character development. For RTS fans and friends of massive multiplayer battles, several RTS skirmish and MP modes guarantee endless hours of exciting gameplay.

Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/aoe2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings is a real-time strategy computer game set in the Middle Ages. Players can select from four factions each of which has a unique look for it's units and a specifically voiced adviser (although all four have identical capabilities) and compete alone or in teams against other humans (locally or via the net) or the assorted Bots that are included. Competition takes place on a variety of terrain, sometimes barren and empty sometimes green and full of rivers.

Once a battle is started, players take turns using a limited supply of energy to launch weapons against their enemies or launch new buildings to expand their base. Both are done with a simple aim and force interface similar to Worms or most early golf games so it takes some skill to land a building exactly where you want it. Because buildings are connected to your main hub with a web of power lines, careful planning is required to avoid leaving important nodes unprotected. There are 18 different weapons and buildings each with an energy cost based on how powerful and useful it is. Ultimately, you must destroy an enemy's main hub unit to eliminate him from the battle.

Moonbase Commander has a minutes to learn, lifetime to master quality. There's never enough energy to do everything you want to and your opposition is always breathing down your neck. Should you risk a tricky shot to place an expensive shield generator by your hub or just settle for launching waves of cheap cluster bombs at those enemy anti-air batteries in hopes of overwhelming them. Maybe you should just bide your time and send up a few more observation balloons. The possibilities are surprisingly limitless in this simple yet complex game.
The very mention of this game sends shivers down the spine of any gamer born before 1995. The game that (while not inventing the genre) almost singlehandedly brought the RTS genre into the minds and harddrives of the general gaming public.

In the game, you play as a lowly general fighting for either the (supposedly) good Global Defense Initiative, or the semi-terrorist Brotherhood of NOD. Both struggling to unlock and control the secrets of the mysterious new lifeform "Tiberium". Eventually, as the plot thickens, you will learn just how the Tiberium future really is.

The gameplay is fairly simple by todays standards, being composed of the now-standard RTS mechanics, but in 1995 it revolutionized the gaming world. This game has a superb storyline, great gameplay, and really is a classic.

Age of Empires

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/AOE1/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Age of Empires involves building a civilization consisting of many different groups, such as the Greeks, Egyptians, etc. that start out in the stone age, and gradually move up to the final stage which is iron. Two political factions have gone to war over a distant world and the secrets it holds in Ground Control, a visually stunning and frenetically paced action/real-time strategy game from Sierra and Massive Entertainment.

By combining strategic combat with fast-paced 3D action elements, Ground Control promises to deliver a fresh experience that will appeal to a wide audience, including online gaming enthusiasts.
At its core, Ground Control is a frenetically paced RTS played out in a visually stunning 3D world. During the course of the game, players will be challenged in an intense arena of battle- effectively managing tactical squads of foot soldiers, mobile units, air craft and support units as they vie for control of a distant planet.

In addition to the epic single-player game, Ground Control's extensive multiplayer component features several unique multiplayer modes including deathmatch-style drop-in games - a first for RTS.
Additional Game Features:

Command your squads in a variety of formations, across rugged terrain, and to victory in several different mission objectives.

Focus on the strategy and action. Ground Control eliminates many of the tedious aspects of typical RTS games and focuses its gameplay on tactics, strategy, and the art of battle.

Choose your troops. Various types of tanks, hover bikes, airplanes, and soldiers will be at your disposal, delivered to the battlefield by orbital dropships.
Arm your troops. Each unit type has special weapons, abilities, and armor. Players can choose to custom fit each unit or let the game auto-select the proper load out for each mission. Special equipment can include medikits, repair kits, image intensifiers, afterburners, various stationary turrets, or repair stations. Most specials can usually be used two or three times during a level, although the most powerful special abilities, such as the bomber's tactical nuclear warhead, are limited to a single use.

Advanced artificial intelligence makes your troops and your enemy's troops act and fight realistically.

A gripping story line will unfold as you command your troops through 30 single-player missions.

Take the battle online. Battle your friends or enemies via the Internet or LAN in traditional RTS multiplay, as well as in multiplayer modes new to the RTS genre.

Control the camera to get a better view of the action. A free-floating camera allows you to zoom in and out and view the action from any angle.

Ground Control completely does away with resource and economic management, expanding the conventional focus from real-time strategy into real-time tactical combat.

Ultra high quality 16Bit textures and amazingly detailed units and buildings. Ground Control employed relatively new 'Rendering Distance' code features that control the level of polygons you can see by the distance at which they are. A character seen at great distance may consist of only a few polygons, but zooming in reveals gorgeous detail.

The Battle for Middle Earth is surprising in that it takes some bold steps to change the RTS standard fare with a very high profile franchise. Most notably, the system for creating buildings and your base in general is very different from the RTS standard. Many people don't care for it, and it was in fact revised for the sequel. Whether that change bothers you or not, the game is enjoyable and also introduces a high-level campaign map which adds another level of tactics and decision making for the player.

Star Wars Force Commander

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/StarWarsForceCommander/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

 From the Developer's web site:
It was first released in November 2002, by Microsoft Game Studios. Following both good reviews and sales, Age of Mythology: The Titans expansion pack was released in 2003. Although it is a continuation of the Age of Empires series, Age of Mythology focuses less on historical accuracy, instead centering around the myths and legends of the Ancient Greeks, the Ancient Egyptians, and the Norse.

Age of Mythology is different from other Ensemble Studios games because it takes place in a Pantheistic solipsistic universe. Unlike previous Age of Empires games, which followed the historical progress of various nations or cultures, "Age of Mythology" follows the exploits of a band of heroes, in an adventure that takes them through all three civilizations.

Taking on the role of one of nine ancient civilizations, players guide their people to greatness by commanding all aspects of their empire: gathering resources, raising massive armies, waging war against enemies, establishing profitable trade routes, building new settlements, enhancing production or military might with improvements, exploring new frontiers, and advancing through four distinct ages.

In their struggle for supremacy, players can use mythological creatures like Minotaurs and Cyclopses to bolster their armies' strength. Players may also call upon the gods for assistance in flattening enemy towns with meteors or scattering opposing troops with lightning storms.

All of this is brought to life using a revolutionary 3D engine developed by Ensemble Studios. The engine is capable of providing the most realistic, beautiful, and immersive world ever seen in a real-time strategy game.

Earth 2160

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/earth2160/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

 Story
A whole new dimension will be added to the game by using virtual agents. Agents are freelancers available for hire who help a player during the game. Each agent has different abilities (they can help with research, unit commands, increasing mining efficiency, spying out enemies, stealing technology etc.) Agents can be hired and fired during the game. Hiring agents is done during an auction where different players can make their bids for the agent. This creates an opportunity to economically defeat an opponent by raising the price of the agent he wants to hire. Each agent remembers his old contracts with the player. The History of old contracts has a strong influence on the price of the agent. A player has to take care of his hired agents otherwise they may not want to work for him in the future. This game manages to take the well-known mythology surrounding the story and focused on the war in the North between the elves, dwarves, goblins, and Mordor forces that is only touched upon in the book and is left out completely in the movies. LORD OF THE RINGS: THE BATTLE FOR MIDDLE EARTH II plays out much like the game of Risk in that players must move their armies around a board that is covered in territories. Players will find that this new battle between good and evil takes place on a much grander scale with six different factions combining to against the forces of Mordor. Players can also combine forces in multiplayer mode to get the most out of the fights. This ability to customize the fighting options makes for a great game no matter what type of mood the player is in. All of these factors make playing the second installment in the Battle for Middle Earth series just as exciting and entertaining as the first time around, without the worry that players will just be repeating the game in a different format.
