The rules will follow the role-playing rules and only vary in the conversion from a turn-based system to a real-time system. All conversions will be justified and will result in similar, if not identical behavior, if viewed in a turn-based time frame.

Physics, scale, and interactions will be of highest importance, followed by accurate input/output (i.e external hardware, see MechWarrior Combat Simulator Cockpit for more explanation), and with visual impressiveness being of lowest importance (i.e. I'm not starting out with beautiful models that don't interact with their environment correctly). Network multi-player is not a priority.

The initial project will cover the technology of 2550. It will start in the year 2550 and span to current time of 3070's. Since a game that size would be imposible to create in one shot, it will start with the range 2550 to 3025, a decline in technology. Each faction will be a separate add-on as will steps in time (3025-3050, 3050-3055, etc.). Clan will be an option, but only through participation in the Exodus.

The primary focus is a single-player game, multi-player is a separate function with the possibility of tying the two together with Solaris VII. The game will be comprised of a multi-generational character (obvious given the time frame). The game will be a collection of campaigns, divided into battles. Progress through the game will present options to the user allowing them to shape their destiny. All element of the game can be either scripted (pre-determined), randomly generated, or a combination of the two.

Robot Battle Arena Unlimited

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/rbau/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

RBAU is a big ambitious project, and aims to be one of the most successful Game Maker Games yet. It RBAU, you get to customize and pilot your own personal robot, join one of the four massive teams, and battle it out over the internet for fame and money (Not real money) with which you can upgrade and customize your robot. It's still early in development, despite the fact that this project first began roughly three years ago.

Toy Robo

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/toy-robo/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Please try it and then let me know what you think :)

Toy Robo is an Action-Adventure Shooter that requires quick hands and engaging strategy. You play as Toy Robo, a robot action figure on the side of good. Your goal is to rid the world of evil toys which appear only at night. You will do this in Arena style combat using your Blaster and Energy sword. To help you along your way, you can equip several types of batteries, each with different combat effects and
bonuses.

This game was developed as an entry to the gamedev.net 4e4 contest which required that it encorporate at least 2 of the following four elements (elements of which ALL games are apparently made of): pirates, ninjas, robots and zombies.

I opted for robots and zombies because robots are easy to model and zombies are easy to animate ^_^

The contest had a 6 month time limit, so I wanted to make sure I didn't bite off more then I could chew. In the end I came in 2nd out of at least 20 - the 1st place finisher was developed by 5 people! so even though I didn't win I felt like the game did very well and the process was rewarding.
It is a sequel to the original Robot Arena. It's a simulation/arcade game based on robotic combat like you see on television. People make robots out of scrap metal and other junk and then try to destroy other people's robots.

Robot Arena, the original game, was a good beginning. It got you hooked into the dream of building your own bot and shredding the competition. But it left you drooling for more... more weapons, more accessories, more ACTION! Robot Arena: Design & Destroy is your new sugar-daddy.

Powered by the Havok Hardcore physics engine, bots can now bounce, flip, twirl, and do the cha-cha. Fragmentation of components will leave hunks of metal lying across the arena floor. With new Shrapnel-on-Demand technology, a piece of twisted steel can even pop out of your floppy disk drive if you aren't careful. (Just kidding about that. The cha-cha I mean.)

The arena is no longer just a flat box. We've got ramps, we've got platforms, we've got hellraisers, sawblades, and other goodies. Heck, the arena alone is fun--just wait til there are three other bots in there. (Oh, did I mention four bots simultaneously?)

And the Bot Lab. Oh, sweet mother of Bot Labs. We know you want more flexibility. So now you can sit at the engineering table and map out your ultimate fighting machine. You'll still have some pre-made toys to play with, but the smartest of you (yes, I mean YOU) will be able to create just about anything you want using basic components--motors, pistons, framework, etc. Your math teacher will hesitate to ever hand you a piece of graph paper again, because you won't be able to resist laying down plans for that next bot-killer.

Multiplayer will be using GameSpy for finding games online without knowing IP addresses, IPX protocols, or IKPC Detonation Codecs (Ok, I made that last one up, anyway.)

As for miscellaneous other, we have some new graphics technology for lightmaps, environment mapping, realtime deformable meshes, and so on and so forth.

MechWarrior

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/mechwarrior/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

MechWarrior was the first computer game set in the BattleTech universe. It put you in the cockpit of a BattleMech and sent you on a number of randomly generated missions. The story line, which spanned over a 5 year period, went as follows:
You are Gideon Braver Vandenburg, and you are heir to your planet. However, the Chalice to give you the throne has been stolen, your family has been killed, and you are exiled. You become a BattleMech mercenary, and go to Inner Sphere to find out who destroyed your life and gain revenge.

Medabots: Robattle 3D

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/robattle3D/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Medabots: Robattle 3D was a promotional game for the Medabots television series,(adapted from the Japanese series, Medarot).

Megaman Legends

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/megamanlegends/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Megaman's first move into 3D, Megaman Legends, or Rockman Dash in its native Japan was a unusual spin on the franchise turning it from a side-scrolling fast-paced shooter to an RPG-esque almost cartoon-like adventure.
Believed by fans to be set several centuries after the Megaman X series, Megaman Legends is set in 'a world covered by endless water.' In this world people must make a living on the tiny patches of land remaining above the sea, relying on Quantum Refractors to power their machines. These Refractors are located in ancient ruins underground and out at sea and tracked down by explorers called Diggers and their Spotters. One day after a successful dig, 14 year-old Digger Megaman Volnutt, his friend Roll, her grandfather Barrel Caskett and Megaman's robot monkey Data (don't ask, it's complicated) crash their ship, the Flutter, on a small island called Kattelox and soon have to contend with a band of sky pirates called the Bonne Brothers, Reaverbots (guardians of the ruins) activating of their own accord and the prophecy of a great disaster seeming to be coming to fruition. Now Megaman's left to deal with all thse problems, with help from his 'family' and the islanders and learn about his own mysterious past.
As always, Megaman is equipped with his Mega Buster, which can be upgraded with the many upgrades scattered around the island and he can also use a variety of special weapons, such as a mine-laying device, a giant cannon, and a drill just to name a few. These weapons aren't found whole however. Several items must be found first so Roll can put them together. The same process goes for upgrades for Megaman himself. For example, to get the Zetsaber, Megaman must first find a Broken Sword and Pen Light in the ruins or scattered around the island.
It looks a bit dated now, and some of the voice acting is pretty terrible but the story is enjoyable enough and the game is solid enough to have stood the test of time.

ChromeHounds

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/chromehounds/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Chromehounds is the first ever mech combat sim for the Xbox360. Chomehounds places you in command of a futuristic fighting machine that is totally customizeable by its pilot, you.

From beginning your first mission in a non-descript training hound to waging war in Chromehound's ever evolving online world, you are in total control of your destiny. You have the ability to create any type of hound you wish. Do you become a run-and-gun pilot? Do you load your trusty sniper rifle and lie in wait? Want to just scout the area with no weapons? Go ahead! Chromehounds allows you to create whatever hound you prefer and play it to its fullest potential; the only limit is your skill.

Departing from the cookie cutter mech style is where Chromehounds takes its greatest achievements. As you build your own hound, you are guided with an abundance of information concerning weight, power, speed, etc... All this must balance in the end.

Gameplay consist of singleplayer and multiplayer. The singleplayer campaign allows you to follow one track (sniper, soldier, heavy gunner, scout, defender, and commander) through the entire game or mix and match, all the while allowing you to return to the previous track to complete all aspect of the game.

The multiplayer portion is extremely open and playable by a solo pilot, but is primarily designed with squads in mind. Get a group of pilots together (up to 9) and use the squad lobby to discuss ideas for hound builds or talk tactics. Your squad mates can even guide you through building a hound from the lobby while you are in the "garage."

Chromehounds is enjoyable in a solo campaign and using Xbox Live.

Mischief Makers

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/MischiefMakers/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Mischeif Makers is a little known game for the N64 about a robot girl named Marinia on a mission to save her maker from the Clancers. There are good Clancers and bad Clancers, but you can beat up both of them. To fight you pick up your opponent and shake or throw them. By shaking somone you can steal their gems. While the game looks like nothing more then a young child's game, it is actually wicked difficult in later levels, a great game for all ages.

Since it is a 2D game, you move with the D-pad instead of the analog stick. You do actions and jumps with the C and A-B buttons. Each level you must reach a warp star at the end to complete it, and once you complete about 10 levels you move on to the next section of the game. This is not a short game.

It has a good sense of humor during the game, and varied bosses and levels to play through.

Roboforge

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/roboforge/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Roboforge was an interesting experiment when it started. There had been other robot programming games before, but few offered the level of customization that Roboforge did. You could create a robot from scratch adding parts as you saw fit.

Once the robot was created you could animate your own moves for it and then incorporate those attacks into a custom AI. When the game launched they had online tournaments for real money and it was both fun and exciting to see your robot smash (or be smashed) by all sorts of crazy contraptions.

Since then the game has gone on to be a free community based project and despite it's quirks and glitches is still an interesting game.

MindRover

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/mindrover/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

MindRover: The Europa Project was first released in 1999 by CogniToy.

Metal Arms: Glitch in the System

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/MetalArms/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

From the Game Box: Blast your way to victory as Glitch, the gunslinging, half-ton fearless bot of Droid City. Metal Arms is a third-person shooter based on a planet populated by robots. This game is fun, fast-paced, and humorous along the way.
The game has multiple seperate paths through the game and the open ended style often leads to the game being described as a Sandbox RPG however in truth the game has little in the way of varation in what you do with the main storyline and would be better described as multiple paths.

Rather then traditional RPG battles of any form your character pilots a Trotmobile which is essentially a steambot styled mecha. Multiple parts can be installed and combined to allow different robot types and tactics. Objects can also be thrown and there are several side missions that one can take.
