VoiD.net is a 2D platformer that tries to take advantage of current technology for revisiting and expanding the platformer genre. It's being developed with Blitzmax.

- What is it... not?

It's not retro or a remake. No "classic" control or feel.

It's not all about jumping down on enemies and collecting coins or rings. No random items floating around. It tries to make the player feel inside a (somewhat) coherent world.

The objective of the game is not get to the end of the level to find out the princess is in another castle. As the story develops, the player will have to adapt to each plot-driven situation.

There's no destined all-good hero trying to save the world. You control a group of characters that have their personalities, lives, and motivations.

Note: I love oldies like Mario Bros and Sonic! - It's not that they're not great games, but this game isn't aiming at that!

- Features?

At this point you'll have figured out VoiD.net has a big adventure component, and this heavily influences the gameplay. It has some RPG aspects (character levelling, skills / "magic") and even tactical wargame or fighting games ones.
Let's say I try to mix what I liked most of each (2D) genre into a platformer. This is the result:

High-res 32bit, hardware accelerated graphics (supporting OpenGL & DirectX currently; probly DX support will be discontinued).

VoiD Engine scripting language for developing customizable campaigns.

Deep immersion in the sci-fi world of Void through ingame narrative, playable cutscenes, "alive" game maps and npcs...

Up to 5 selectable characters at the same time in the player party.

Fast paced control system, designed for heavy action scenes.

Vehicles, some controlable by the player.

Levelling system for characters. Character classes & subclasses, skills (including some kind of magic), buyable equipment, award system a la Tactics Ogre...

Fluid character animation, thanks to VoiD Engine 2D Skeletal Animation System.

Ambient, weather and cinematic effects (graphic effects via shaders, when available).

Lots of developer love :)

- Personal note

I've been into development (on my own) for more than 2 years, and I know I still have long ways to go. The game has evolved a lot since its first form and has become somewhat complex.
This may sound crazy for just one dev, but I have my reasons. It's a very personal project, because I see it as my "ultimate freeware game" before starting to think more... commercial.
It's heavily influenced by the classic Konami MSX game 'The Maze of Galious' and anyone who has played that title will probably recognize the similarities very quickly. You play the whip-wielding Indiana Jones-esque archaeologist Lemeza Kosugi as he investigates the ancient ruins of La-Mulana in an attempt to find its treasure and one-up his father, who is trying to get the same treasure as well.

The game is huge, with many different areas to explore and dozens of items and weapons to find. Each area has a large variety of puzzles and traps and you need to solve the puzzles in each area to discover the Ankhs and Ankh Jewels, which allow you to fight the eight Guardians of the ruins. To solve the puzzles you'll need to be able to read the tablets scattered throughout the ruins, which will require a Hand Scanner and translation software for the portable MSX that Lemeza has brought along on the adventure. Your Hand Scanner will also allow you to find items and search the bones of less fortunate adventurers.

Note that the original game comes in Japanes, so apply the english patch (link at the bottom).

Dave was on his way to distribute newly printed Kilopowa New Testaments to a tribe who has been working hard to translate it for a number of years. They're really looking forward to receiving their Bibles, but Dave's plane goes down in the jungle. As he was crashing through the treetops, the Bibles spilled out of his plane all over the jungle. You would think this would ruin the Bibles, but it just so happens that the printer of these Bibles shrink-wrapped them in plastic, so all of these Bibles are now happily protected from the elements, just waiting for Dave to collect them and deliver them to the Kilopowa villagers.

Dave must run through the jungle, dodging denizens and collecting Bibles to bring them to the waiting tribe. His travels will take him from the leafy jungles to abandoned mines and caves and up to the mountain tops before he finally reaches his destination.
The author received a ton of mail and submissions by people creating their own Jetpack levels. The built in level editor is one of the most popular features - over 1000 levels have been created. Some teachers bought Jetpack because they considered the editor to be educational, encouraging their students' creativity.

Jetpack was the top selling game for both publishers that carried it (Software Creations and Impulse Games). Jetpack runs fine on an 8086, and surprisingly well on today's computers!

Jetpack has been made freeware by its author so it is now free to download.

escapade

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/escapade/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Trapped inside a pop-up book, Iris must find a way through the maze of each page before time runs out.

MagniBabyPix

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/MagniBabyPix/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

 MagniBabyPix!
