Battleships Forever is a freeware tactical Real Time Strategy game that puts you in command of a small fleet of warships in space. Combat and damage mechanics are extremely detailed. Everything is simulated in game if possible. There are no abitrary "to hit chance" values in Battleships Forever. The game also features many innovative mechanics that you've never seen before. For example, the Cronus Battleship sports a Flux Shield generator that allows you to draw a defensive force shield around your ships in any shape you want. Another example are the Deflector modules that are used extensively through the game. These modules make a single section of a ship totally invulnerable to fire. This means that you will have to manoeuvre your ships to attack sections of the enemy ships not protected by Deflectors while keeping your own protected sections facing the enemy. Position is paramount!

Players will command picked fleets made up of Battleships, Destroyers and Patrol Craft. The completed game will include ten campaign missions and multiple skirmish modes.

The core game engine is released under the GPL License; however, the prepackaged mod that comes with the standard installation requires that one own a copy of TA to legally play it. There is, however, an official release which uses fully free content, and there are a number of mods, both in development and released, that are also completely free to use.

Spring is being developed by the Swedish Yankspankers and the Spring community. The initial goal was to have the game run the mods and 3rd party units from Total Annihilation. This goal is now mostly complete, and the project has moved on to including additional features. The game is mainly focused around multiplayer games over the Internet or a LAN connection. There are currently no single player campaigns or missions, although there is some basic support for this through Lua scripting. There are also many skirmish AIs under development, allowing for offline play or extra players in an online game. Two skirmish AIs ship in the game package.

Warcraft 2

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/war2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Warcraft II Battle.net Edition is the continuation of the ruthless clash between the armies of the noble Humans and the brutish Orcs. The very mention of this game sends shivers down the spine of any gamer born before 1995. The game that (while not inventing the genre) almost singlehandedly brought the RTS genre into the minds and harddrives of the general gaming public.

In the game, you play as a lowly general fighting for either the (supposedly) good Global Defense Initiative, or the semi-terrorist Brotherhood of NOD. Both struggling to unlock and control the secrets of the mysterious new lifeform "Tiberium". Eventually, as the plot thickens, you will learn just how the Tiberium future really is.
A great prequel to C&C, a legendary classic, and a must have.
Two political factions have gone to war over a distant world and the secrets it holds in Ground Control, a visually stunning and frenetically paced action/real-time strategy game from Sierra and Massive Entertainment.

By combining strategic combat with fast-paced 3D action elements, Ground Control promises to deliver a fresh experience that will appeal to a wide audience, including online gaming enthusiasts.

At its core, Ground Control is a frenetically paced RTS played out in a visually stunning 3D world. During the course of the game, players will be challenged in an intense arena of battle- effectively managing tactical squads of foot soldiers, mobile units, air craft and support units as they vie for control of a distant planet.

In addition to the epic single-player game, Ground Control's extensive multiplayer component features several unique multiplayer modes including deathmatch-style drop-in games - a first for RTS.

Additional Game Features:

Command your squads in a variety of formations, across rugged terrain, and to victory in several different mission objectives.

Focus on the strategy and action. Ground Control eliminates many of the tedious aspects of typical RTS games and focuses its gameplay on tactics, strategy, and the art of battle.

Choose your troops. Various types of tanks, hover bikes, airplanes, and soldiers will be at your disposal, delivered to the battlefield by orbital dropships. However once you are in battle you won't be able to make more, so proper troop selection will be key to success.

Arm your troops. Each unit type has special weapons, abilities, and armor. Players can choose to custom fit each unit or let the game auto-select the proper load out for each mission. Special equipment can include medikits, repair kits, image intensifiers, afterburners, various stationary turrets, or repair stations. Most specials can usually be used two or three times during a level, although the most powerful special abilities, such as the bomber's tactical nuclear warhead, are limited to a single use.

Advanced artificial intelligence makes your troops and your enemy's troops act and fight realistically.

A gripping story line will unfold as you command your troops through 30 single-player missions.

Take the battle online. Battle your friends or enemies via the Internet or LAN in traditional RTS multiplay, as well as in multiplayer modes new to the RTS genre.

Control the camera to get a better view of the action. A free-floating camera allows you to zoom in and out and view the action from any angle.

Ground Control completely does away with resource and economic management, expanding the conventional focus from real-time strategy into real-time tactical combat.

Ultra high quality 16Bit textures and amazingly detailed units and buildings. Ground Control employed relatively new 'Rendering Distance' code features that control the level of polygons you can see by the distance at which they are. A character seen at great distance may consist of only a few polygons, but zooming in reveals gorgeous detail.

Hands-on tutorial gets you up to speed for your role as a battlefield commander by tasking you with various and comprehensive objectives and enemy engagements.

It is one of the most advanced RTS's to date, with a highly detailed, fully destructable world, and its own physics engine, and complete camera control, players of this game can feel involved like never before. The level of realism in the game means that unlike most other RTS's, the tactical use of your units is more important than simply outnumbering the enemy.

The campaign mode follows the allies following the assault at Normandy. The missions are nicely varied in objectives and game style, with badges to collect as bonusses at each level.

Online, you can play both tournament style and casually, with a max of 4v4. The maps are varied nicely, meaning players need to adapt their style of play to each one. Each map can be played as either annihilation, where the objective is the destroy the enemy, or as victory point, where players can also win by holding points for a length of time.

The online section of the game also includes a community with news updates, chatrooms and a buddies system.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/Ccmmandandconquerra2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

This game is one of the best entries on the Command and conquer universe yet.

The game isn't a direct entry on the series, but rather a spin off based on the cold war between US and Russia coupled with a sci fi twist.

The game introduces funny characters that make a lot of funny moments while you're playing it. You'll meet megalomaniac Yuri, the heroic Tanya, the goofy Romanov and the very standard president of the United States, along with a very funny set of other characters.

The game is standard RTS gameplay on steroids(for its time anyway), it's fast paced, and although the strategy involves often more brute force than the strategy part, the action and the range of things you can do more than make up for it.

You can start by selecting your outfit, the allies or the soviets, who in this game are a super power taking over the world thanks to psychological technology developer by Yuri.

Depending on the side you take, you'll have a select army very balanced against your enemy, with the Russians being strong with units like specialized tanks, soldiers and general ground forces whereas the allies have strong air forces and other bonuses.

The game has a high and addictive fun factor, which means that if you're in college or have to work early in the morning it's not recommendable to set your hands in this game as you'll easily see yourself playing up to 8 hours of it. It's simply that good, so if you happen to not have played it and you have a copy nearby, fret not and pick it up. Deep under the central desert of Kronus, a vast honeycomb of skull-lined tunnels and funereal chambers house the awakening mass of the Necron plague. Eons ago, these were the boulevards and squares of a great necropolis built to house the bones of the races who had fallen to the Necron purge, and ultimately for the Necron themselves to retire to. Over the millions of years, sand and rock had covered it all until ill-fated excavations awoke the deathless again. Play any of seven races, striving for control over Kronus. Take other races' strongholds by winning challenging battles on various maps individually associated with the respective Strongholds.

Sins Of A Solar Empire

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/SoaSE/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Sins of a Solar Empire is an innovative real-time strategy game featuring seamless transition between epic strategy and tactical combat modes, initiating what is already becoming known as the RT4X sub-genre. Released in 1992, Dune II proved to be successful with gamers and critics alike due to its addictive playability and innovative game design - the gameplay has been emulated many times since. Dune II led the huge upsurge in popularity the genre has enjoyed right up until this day and is considered to be the Godfather of real-time strategy games.

The plot consists of three waring parties named House Atreides, House Harkonnen and House Ordos. All are vying for control of the most important planet in the known universe - Arrakis, better known as Dune. The planet Arrakis contains the only known source of the valuable and essential spice called Melange. Melange is the primary resource collected in-game and it funds the war effort of each house - the more spice one possesses, the more successful one becomes.

The game is played from a top-down perspective and can be controlled entirely by mouse. The aim is to build an army of a big enough size to seize land, eliminate any opposing threat and ultimately expand your dynasty. Each map contains spice deposits that need to be collected via harvesters. The spice is then transported to a refinery and tuned into credits, which can then be spent on the expansion of base and the construction of more units. As the game progresses more technologically advanced units and structures become available, changing the dynamics of the battlefield.

The game was re-made twice by Westwood though only the original was ported to the Sega Mega Drive, Amiga, Archimedes and Risc PC range of RISC OS computers.

Harvest

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/harvest/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Harvest is a real-time strategy game currently in development by Oxeye Game Studio.

The basic idea of the game is that you must gather two kinds of resources - minerals and energy - and use them to construct defenses for your base. The base is attacked by endless numbers of aliens and you will have to try to survive for as long as possible.

Blizzard of War

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/bow/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

A classic RTS game (Real-Time Strategy) with a fun and long deserving theme -- the winter snowball fight. Harvest the precious maple sap, fortify your snowy defenses, and command your grade school army in a battle for supremacy over the vacant lot and community soccer fields. Dominate the other neighborhoods to prove your snowy genius amidst a Blizzard of War.
The sap must flow...

Your character choices are: a jetpack-loving British-ish alien, a semi-mermaid sorceress/archer, or an incredibly huge roaring monster that eats everything. All of them are a lot of fun and you play as each during the game's campaign.

Gameplay is usually third-person shooting, but there's also resource collection, base-building, and even some vehicle races.

The most unusual thing about Giants is that it tries to be funny - and is funny! Don't skip the cut-scenes on this one.

Multiplayer supports large games with different modes. The most common is base vs base where each team tries to collect the most resources (brainy smarties) and destroy the enemy teams's base before it can be rebuilt. Resources are spent on buildings for weapon upgrades, base defense, and vehicle production. One player can be the giant Kabuto who's almost impossible to take down.
