Axion is a 4 colour (greyscale) shoot'em up made for the Retro Remakes 4-colour TI calculator style competition.

Story

Thousands of years ago the Atlantians built a huge inter-dimensional portal with the intent of trapping a huge foe inside. The portal worked perfectly, but at the last minute the huge beast was able to pull their entire city in with it. Knowing the they were unable to save the city and that the beast would eventually be able to break free without anyone able to watch over it, they sent out their last hope, Axion.

Axion was a specially designed craft known as a "Dimension diver" which made it the only man-made creation that was able to seemlesly escape the pull of the triangular portal.

Thousands of years later after absorbing much of its surroundings including people, ships and planes, the beast was able to take control of its own prision, although it was still not quite powerful enough to escape entirely. Using all the energy it had absorbed over the many years, the beast took control of the portal and projected it into outer space using mankind's own orbiting satillites. The portal was now 50 times its original size, big enough to engulf the entire planet...and this was the plan. If the beast could absorb the entire planet, then it would have enough energy to break free from its Atlantian prision.

After detecting the huge power surge, Axion emerged out of the ocean and blasted off into outer space to stop the beast before it was too late.

Super Obliteration

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/superobliteration/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

The original game is (c) 1993 David Papworth (appeared on an Amiga Power magazine cover disk)
Crush the Critters is a game of whack-a-mole for your feet (using the dance pad), your mouse or your keyboard (you cheater!).

The first beta is live!

The game has entered the first beta, which is just the Classic Mode. Some graphics still need polishing up, the sounds aren't complete, but that's what these early betas are for :) The game works, and will at least give you an idea of what's coming. Also please note that the game is more or less for kids, particularly at this stage without the humor of Adventure mode. Also please note that the game is shrunken quite a bit because of the size of the webpage! For full size play and to become an official beta tester, go to http://www.hedonismgames.com/beta/index.html

Instructions

Click the critters as they come out before they can hide again! You can also use keyboard keys, although it makes the game much easier. They are (corresponding to the screen squares)

Q W E
A ~ D (there is no middle here)
Z X C

A Foot-Tastic Adventure!

As the resident Critter Stomper, your hometown has been overcome by the imminent threat of an onslaught of cute critters! It's up to you, moving from your own town, through numerous locales and ultimately into outer space to stop the critters!

Using the typical dance pad 3x3 grid (with the exception of the middle square, of course), the player must stomp on critters as they appear on the screen.

In classic RPG sense, collect equipment (shoes, socks, shoe laces and aglets - you know, those little things that cap the end of your shoe laces?), level up and collect money through bounties and successful missions crushing the cute-but-monstrous critters.

Play is best with the dance pad, although the entire game can also be played with the mouse (great for Wii players) or the keyboard.

Classic Mode

Classic mode is just like in the arcades! Play a quick round, choosing where to crush the critters, which ones to crush, how long to play and the difficulty. When done, collect your tickets, which can be used to purchase bonuses (cheats, artwork, etc.) or printable rewards!

Awwwww... So Cute!

Crush the Critters has a fantastic artist - Ariel Marsh - who is handling all the great, cartoony style of the game.

Printable Rewards

Printable Rewards are one of the greatest things about Crush the Critters! Why just let the game sit when you're done when you can print out all sorts of things, showing off your accomplishments?

Other Features

Other great features of the game will include:

Unlockable locales (places) and critters for Classic Mode.

Playable on the Wii Opera Browser!

Cheat Modes and Challenges.

G-Force

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/gforce/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Sometimes 3d isn't always the best.

The object of the game is to earn money by catching ghosts.
This is done by moving to a flashing haunted building on the map where the game shifts to a ghost catching scene.
Successfully catch the ghost and you get paid $400.
Fail, you get slimed and loose a man.

While this is happening, the keymaster and gate keeper are slowly moving toward's Zuul's building in the centre of the map.

Once they meet, you are called to the building where, assuming you have made more money than you started with, you must get passed the Marshmallow man for the final battle.
This game was created for the Retro Remakes competition 2004.

Playing the Game

Ten challengers await, each with ten cookie puzzles. Can you become the cookie eating king?

On each level you will be given a set number of moves in which to remove all the cookies from the puzzle board. The puzzles range in size from 2x2 up to 8x8.

To remove cookies you must make a complete row of column of the same type. This is done by scrolling them up, down, left and right.

The cookies are wrap-around - the one you move off the board will appear on the opposite side.

If all cookies are removed, you will move onto the next puzzle, and if not then you lose a "retry" and must attempt the stage again, or press escape and go back to the title screen.

When the game begins you have ten "retries" and five more are earned for every opponent you defeat.

There are passwords every ten stages, at the beginning of each new opponent.

Sounds simple? Well it is to begin with... But it get a little tougher as the levels progress.

But that's the way the cookie crumbles. Good luck!
If you uncover STompy he will hide all the squares again ( expect for bonus, moves and mines ). Bonus squares give you 500 points and a moves square will reset the number of moves you have for that level.

Out in the vastness of space lies the heart of an Intergalactic Criminal Network, TALOS, a man-made asteroid slowly spinning through the void, spreading its evil through the Universe. At the head of this seemingly unstoppable force sits one man, the unspeakably vile Cyrus T. Gross.

A name spoken only in whispered voices, Gross is the embodiment of all that is criminal. Avoiding any attempt to curtail his ever spreading empire, he has crushed all opposition and seems invincible, ruling his depraved Zealots with a fist of iron and a heart of ice.

In a last ditch attempt, the rulers of the Free Worlds have called in the Nemesis organisation, a hardened cadre of humanoid and robotic freebooters who have assigned N.O.M.A.D. 471 (Nemesis Organisation Mobile Attack Droid) to penetrate Gross's heavily armed home world and destroy this vile despot once and for all.

Your mission is to guide N.O.M.A.D. through the four sections of Capital City towards Gross's inner sanctum.

You arrive at the spaceport and must then progress through the slums, into the city centre and penetrate the HQ; "Dun Dentin', before you reach his personal quarters for the final deadly confrontation.

Many dangers await you in all sections of Capital City. In true cowardly style, Gross has installed magnetrons, heat-seeking missiles,
and an infinity of equally deadly obstacles, all of which must be confronted and conquered.

N.O.M.A.D. 471 Specifications

Autonomous war-droid with high-intelligence, Infra-red visual receptors and high-frequency audio-receivers.
Fitted with anti-gravity pods and twin thrusters functional in both forward and backward directions and capable of great speeds with a high degree of manoeuvrability.

Armament

Titanium body shell ... Not totally impregnable. Two magnum 57 calibre blasters. The N.O.M.A.D. 471 series is as yet untested. This is his first and possibly deadliest mission. The chances of survival are slim ...

The freedom of the Universe is in your hands.

A split-screen mode for two players is also includes which allows for some fun matches between two human players.

The game comes with 6 different scenarios which are fully 3D : Ancient egypt, european middle ages, modern industrial setting, a prehistorical forest, a futuristic scenario and a greek colloseum.

Sword of Fargoal Remake

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/fargoal/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Former owners of a C64 certainly will remember Sword of Fargoal. It was created by Jeff McCord and released for the C64 by Epyx in 1983. It is a simple rogue-like game (preceding the first official release of Rogue though). And according to http://www.cdaccess.com/html/pc/150best.htm,
it is one of the best 150 games ever. A summary of its description could read like this:

You are on a quest to retrieve the Sword of Fargoal, which lies between
levels 15 and 20 of a dungeon. The dungeon levels are populated by an
ever-regrowing number of different monsters, the deeper the dungeon level,
the stronger the monsters. By retrieving experience points and collecting
treasures, your own strength will increase as well, while finding your way
down through randomly generated dungeons. With the help of different items
and all sorts of spells, and by escaping various kinds of traps, you
finally can find the Sword of Fargoal in the middle of a labyrinth - which
doesn't mean your done, no way, now the game only really begins. A timer
is started, and you have to get back up to the dungeon entrance again
before time runs out. This isn't as easy as it sounds, because dungeon
levels are newly created and look different every time you climb up or
down, and are now full of monsters waiting to steal the sword from you -
in which case you have to climb down and find it again - but the timer
isn't reset.

You have been chosen for a mission: break into the rebels' ammunition depot and destroy the entire supply, thus dealing a crushing blow to the rebellion. You have been given an ACE Mk.2 Interceptor tank with which to carry out your mission.

Playing the Game

Shoot the "red boxes of ammo" and the "red pyramid warheads" for points.

You can only fire in the direction you are facing, and if there isn't a space between you and the ammo or warhead, there is no space to turn. Find a way of positioning yourself so that you can face them - they are all possible, but some may be puzzling.

Destroy them all and a beacon will appear showing where to place your tank to be beamed to the next ammo-dump in the complex.

The rebels are trying to destroy you before you accomplish your mission, with their orbital laser, but your jamming device can keep them from getting a lock for a while.

Keep an eye on the timer, when it runs out the jammer will fail, and the laser will be able to destroy you.

There are security droids and enemy tanks in the complex, which will try and tag you with and electronic marker - if you are touched and marked, the laser will be able to lock on despite your jamming-device!

Extra lives are awarded every 50,000 points.

This version (like the original game) has 16 levels. The original crashed after level 16, and didn't have an end sequence, the remake will take you back to level 1 to rack up a higher score.

The top five scores are saved to disk, along with the level reached.

Controls

Cursor Keys or joy-pad to move the tank.
Control-Key or Fire Button 1 to shoot

"P" to pause the game

The game is full screen by default, but if you wish to play it in a window then use the switch "/window" on the command line.

Ghostbusters GBA

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/GhostbustersGBA/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

From Wikipedia: Ghostbusters is a game by Activision based on the movie of the same name. It was designed by David Crane and released for several home computer platforms in 1984.

The player sets up a ghost busting franchise in a city with a rising Psychokinetic (PK) Energy level and has the ability to purchase equipment such as traps, or to upgrade their vehicle.

The player then negotiates a grid representing the city. They need to stop the "roamers" from reaching the temple of Zuul (which causes the PK Energy level to jump). When the player moves to a city block that is flashing red, the game mode switches to an overhead view of the player's vehicle driving to the location.

The player must move left and right to vacuum up the stray ghosts. The player then moves to a screen in which a Slimer ghost must be guided with two proton streams over a ghost trap.

If the ghost is successfully captured, the player's income increases. The aim is to have $10,000 by the time the city's PK level reaches 9999.

In some versions after the first successful game, the player is given an account number, which stores the amount of money the player had at the end of the game. This allowed for purchasing more expensive items for use (faster cars, more traps etc.). In order to win at these games the player was required to have earned more money than their initial account balance.

Vector's Revenge

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/vectorsrevenge/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Coded for a mini-competition, this is a remake of the most famous original concept game on the Atari 2600, Yar's Revenge.

On each screen your ship begins in the centre, and you must move and collect all the 80s items that are placed around the grid.

Most levels have holes which cannot be crossed, and must be moved around.

On the four edges of the grid there are moving laser cannons, which will attempt to destroy you with their photon shots. If one of them is level with your ship, either vertically or horizontally, they will open fire. Keep moving!

There is no ingame pause, but you may have a breather between levels, or before retrying a level you have failed.

If you complete all the levels, then you will be returned to the first, but the game speed will increase.

CONTROLS

On the title screen you can access the high-score boards using the cursor keys to move the tabs out from the sides of the screen, and to move up and down through the online scoreboard's four pages.

Also on the title screen, you may press "S" to sync the online board with the scores on my site.

PLEASE NOTE: Some firewalls may kick off or not allow you to post your scores - please make sure you have allowed the file access to the net connection. (you may have to ALT-TAB out of the game the first time you try to sync, in order to do this.)
This game was created for the Retro Remakes Competition 2004.

Playing the Game

Take control of your rookie trashman and lead him to the heady heights of head-trashman in a matter of days! You must guide trashman around various streets, locating and picking up the rubbish bins. These must be carried to the truck and emptied before being placed back where you found them.

However, things aren't as easy as they seem! Cars try to run you down, kids on bikes will run over your feet and make you move more slowly. Worst of all, tread on someone's lawn and you may find their dog snapping at your heels!

Each street must be completed within a set time limit, and extra care must be taken to stay off the grass and out of the bushes, as these will both drain your time limit incredibly quickly!

As a bonus, if you empty a house's bins perfectly you may be invited in for a certain amount of bonus time - and you'll need every second on some of the later levels!

Pull down to exit the house, but this can only be done after a couple of seconds inside.

After you have emptied all the bins you must walk up to the very top of the street, to complete the day's work and go home to rest until the next shift.

The game ends when you are run over and killed by a car, if you fail to complete your assigned task within the time limit three times, or if you complete all the assignments.
R-Tronic, originally designed for the Retro Remakes 2003 Competition takes the basic premise of Robotron and expands it into an up to date, gorgeous looking all action shooter.

Lode Runner: The Legend Returns

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/legendreturns/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

  From the box description:

Avoid spikes, and spines and deadly cubes, while crushing all the cylinders contained in each level. When you have destroyed all the cylinders the exit will become open and you can cross the exit to the next corridor.

Score points for distance travelled, and cylinders crushed.

Watch your time, if it runs out then your game is over. More time can be acquired by pressing down the "Green Timer Disks", but beware: Once you touch them and take the prize, they will become "Red Disks of Death" and cannot be touched again.

Extra lives are awarded every 10,000 points.

The original Spectrum game contained eight corridors, who knows what challenging courses could have been built since then!

If you complete all the corridors, you will be returned to the first, but each time you loop around the level set, the time allowed will be reduced.

The top five scores are saved to disk... How high can you score? How far can you get?
It consists of 4 single-screen levels with a different key feature on each. Even in BBC Micro terms it was early and simplistic, so don't expect too much from it.

The game was made in GameMaker, for the 2003 Retro Remakes Competition.

RoidRage

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/roidrage/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

WIP Asteroids inspired vector style title.

When learning a new system the first thing you do is remake a classic. When I wanted to do hardware accelerated glowy vectors I turned to one of the greatest (and also most remade) games of them all asteroids.

RoidRage isn't going to be a clone of asteroids but a game in the style of asteroids, with powerups and more enemy types for starters.
