Prism is an action adventure platform game featuring a character comprised of two contrasting software systems; a creative artificial intelligence and a restrictive algorithm. Roaming from level to level to neutralise viruses in a corrupted server network, Routine404 is able to take three principle forms: Biped Mode, Jet Mode and Pure Mode.

It is also possible for Routine404 to take the form of its enemies in later stages of the game after being subjected to enemy code. The game world takes place across 7 nodes of the server network. Each node is split into rooms called cells, and each node is joined by a vertical scrolling shoot-em up section where Routine404 is in Jet Mode throughout.

Some levels begin with 3D cut scene animation for storytelling purposes, and some actions such as opening doors or defeating end-of-level enemies trigger short 3D animated clips.

As the player progresses through the game, an increased effort is made to draw the player's attention to his/her interaction with the game. The purpose of which is to generate a perspective of self reference; one that encourages the player to question their role within the game, and the role of the game (and interactive media as a whole) in their life.

The climax of the game reveals that the enemy and hero are one and the same; both created for the purpose of storytelling by a force that remains elusive.

The reward for completion of the game is a generative level; one that is created dynamically at run time for the player to obtain a high score among a community of players.

Out Of Space

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/OutOfSpace/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

The Spherics, creators of Dimensions, have split apart into spectralized representations. The player character is U-1 ("YÅ«ichi": a common Japanese boys' name; pronounced "you-one" in the North American and European releases), a young boy who is frequently ridiculed by classmates and passed over by Little Pico, the girl of his dreams. The story proper begins when Puma, a dog with the capability to speak, teaches U-1 to play the guitar--simultaneously teaching the controls of the game to the player--and subsequently revealing to him that he is the last legendary hero of Planet Gitaroo, a title which sets him up as a target by many varied individuals.

Osu! Ouendan

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/OsuTatakaeOuendan/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Ouendan details the plight of several characters in hopeless situations who cry out for help. In response, the Ouendan, an all-male cheer squad wearing highly stylized black uniforms (based on gaku-ran Japanese school uniforms) with red armbands, appear to help each character work through their problems by cheering them through music. The origin of the Ouendan is unexplained in the game, though they always arrive on the spot where help is needed, possibly appearing from a nearby supply closet or a food stall.

Most of the scenarios are inspired by modern Japanese culture, or are heavily influenced by the Japanese form of print comics, or manga. For instance, the first stage features a high school student distracted from studying for his college entrance exams by his family, while a later stage focuses on a pottery master who has lost the inspiration to create unique works. Most of the stories are presented in a light-hearted or comical fashion, emphasized by absurd storyline twists and the sounds of whistles and cheer shouts as the player progresses through each stage. The one notable exception to this is a love story set to the song "Over the Distance," which is told in a more heartfelt, subdued tone further marked by the gameplay's whistle sound effect being replaced with subtle chimes.

While the individual stories otherwise have no connecting theme to them, characters from some stories reappear in others as background figures or supporting characters. However, all of the characters reappear in the final story, in which the Ouendan must lead the entire world in a cheer to save Earth from being destroyed by an asteroid.

Vib-Ribbon

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/vibribbon/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Here comes vibri, the coolest bunny on the block. Just drop your CD in and watch as vib-ribbon works its magic, creating a level that matches the tempo and tone of the music.
Each color-coded track corresponds to a different aspect of the song, such as percussion, synth, bass, or vocals, and contains a sequence of notes. As the player hits buttons corresponding to the note placement on the track, the notes activate a small portion of the track. If the player successfully activates enough notes in sequence, the track is "captured" and the section will play automatically for a number of bars, freeing the player to capture another section.

There are several different powerups available to the player to make gameplay easier. Powerups are gained by activating a series of specially shaped and colored notes. Such powerups allow immediate capturing of tracks, doubling of points scored, slowing down the speed of play, and jumping into freestyle mode (which allows the player to riff to the music, gaining points without the difficulty of playing predefined tracks).

The game is structured as a series of levels, each containing a number of regular songs, a "boss" song, and a bonus song available when the player reaches a sufficient aggregate score for the level.

FreQuency

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/frequency/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

In the game, a player portrays a virtual avatar called a "FreQ" (pronounced "freak"), and travels down an octagonal tunnel, with each wall containing a musical track. These tracks contain sequences of notes. As the player hits buttons corresponding to the note placement on the track, the "sonic energy" from within is released and the music plays. If the player plays two measures of the track without any errors, the track is "captured" and the music plays automatically until the next pre-determined section of the song.

FreQuency allowed players to create remixes of any of the songs in the game. While the player was limited to the instruments and structure of the song, the remix could include different melodies or beat lines, change in tempo, and modulation of the sound of an instrument. Remixes could then be saved and played as normal songs, though no high score records are kept for these.

Guitar Hero 2

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/GuitarHero2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

RedOctane's follow-up to the critically acclaimed rhythm game. Guitar Hero II features a brand-new and expanded track list, more venues and new play modes, and aims to rock longer and harder than its predecessor. In total, Guitar Hero II features more than 55 songs.
