Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/ouendan2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Osu! Everybody's favorite DS rhythm action game is back! Prepare to help people and save the world again with the power of dance and song in Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2. This is a direct sequel to Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan and not Elite Beat Agents, which is a remake of sorts of the first game with different songs, characters and stories for the western market.

Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii follows more or less the storyline from the original Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, and is set roughly four years after the original game. Players act as the leader of a three-person cheerleading squad. Whenever someone is stressed out or backed into a corner, all they need to do is shout "Ouendan!" (Japanese for "Cheer Squad"). Then, the Ouendan appear (usually out of a place like a closet or are there already eating ramen) and use cheering and dance to help the that someone through their troubles.

The original characters (signified by wearing their long Gakuran jackets) are still there, cheering people on. However, a new set of rivals appear that challenge the original Ouendan in skill and cheering (the "new" Ouendan are signified by their blue military-style outfits.) The individual stories are all unrelated, but characters featured in one stage may appear as background or supporting characters in another. In the final stage, all of the characters in the game unite when the two Ouendan join together and once again lead the entire world in a cheer to save Earth.

Audition: Online Dance Battle

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/auditiononline/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

You're on the dance floor,
Ouendan

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/OsuTatakaeOuendan/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Ouendan details the plight of several characters in hopeless situations who cry out for help. In response, the Ouendan, an all-male cheer squad wearing highly stylized black uniforms (based on gaku-ran Japanese school uniforms) with red armbands, appear to help each character work through their problems by cheering them through music. The origin of the Ouendan is unexplained in the game, though they always arrive on the spot where help is needed, possibly appearing from a nearby supply closet or a food stall.

Most of the scenarios are inspired by modern Japanese culture, or are heavily influenced by the Japanese form of print comics, or manga. For instance, the first stage features a high school student distracted from studying for his college entrance exams by his family, while a later stage focuses on a pottery master who has lost the inspiration to create unique works. Most of the stories are presented in a light-hearted or comical fashion, emphasized by absurd storyline twists and the sounds of whistles and cheer shouts as the player progresses through each stage. The one notable exception to this is a love story set to the song "Over the Distance," which is told in a more heartfelt, subdued tone further marked by the gameplay's whistle sound effect being replaced with subtle chimes.

While the individual stories otherwise have no connecting theme to them, characters from some stories reappear in others as background figures or supporting characters. However, all of the characters reappear in the final story, in which the Ouendan must lead the entire world in a cheer to save Earth from being destroyed by an asteroid.

beatmania

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/beatmania/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

The first Bemani game, and one of the first rythm games ever. beatmania [sic] is a DJ simulation game where you hit the keys in the rythm of the music to complete songs. A simple idea that has created very complicated gameplay as you progress.

This page covers the very first in the series that was exclusive to Japan, but released in the US as "Hiphopmania". It was released to the arcades first and then rereleased to the Playstation.
