Fantastic aircraft art and realistic flight models characterize the series. Would be pilots will be challenged by the detailed engine and systems management, which varies from type to type.
A Targetware Mod.

fury3

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/fury3/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

If you've ever played 3DRealms' shareware favorite Terminal Velocity (TV), you'll be quick to recognize that Fury3 is nothing more than warmed-over TV, released as one of the first titles designed with Win95's 32-bit abilities in mind. So let me quickly get the brief comparison out of the way.

The big difference between Fury3 and Terminal Velocity is that Fury3 runs in Windows. Installation is much easier, and you are dealing with the familiar Windows interface. There are slight changes in the worlds, new Star Wars-type enemies, and varied cockpit perspectives but, in general, Fury3 is not any faster, more colorful or more exciting than Terminal Velocity. For those who have never played either of these titles, let me make clear that Fury3 is still fast, colorful, and exciting enough to ensure a white-knuckled, high-adrenaline, duckin-and-dodging-in-your-seat kind of gameplay experience. Note that slowdown will occur with 486/66 machines. The game features a first-person, 3-D point of view which puts you right in the middle of a futuristic battle zone, with nothing less than the future of the world at stake. The graphics are extremely impressive, giving you the sensation of speeding along just above the ground, weaving through tight, underground passageways, or soaring up through the cloud layer. Explosions and flying debris highlight the combat sequences. Power-ups and hidden passageways are all available to help you on your journey.

You're not going to get a lot of extended play value from Fury3. Despite the vastness of the worlds, which allows you to fly around and look for hidden tunnels and powerups, there is not enough variety from level to level, or even from enemy to enemy, to keep a hard-core shooter fan interested beyond the first couple of worlds. If you just need a quick fix of high-speed flying and blasting, though, Fury3 is a great way to pass some time.

Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/ac04/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

The player takes on the role of the top fighter pilot, Mobius 1, of the Mobius Squadron in the air force of the Independent States Allied Forces (ISAF), fighting against the Erusians who have occupied almost all of the Usea continent after an apocalyptic event in 1999. A massive asteroid, codenamed Ulysses 1994 XF-04 struck Usea, killing 500,000 people and turning many into refugees. Erusea used this as an opportunity to occupy the continent after a prolonged military buildup. The Erusians have achieved supremacy via the superweapon Stonehenge, a battery of railguns which was originally designed to destroy asteroids but has been found to be effective against airplanes as well, due to the massive shockwave it releases when it fires. Consequently, ISAF has been pushed back to the eastern coast of Usea.

Between the missions the story is told through letters written to Mobius 1 from a boy whose parents were killed when a fighter jet crashed into their house in San Salvacion. The fighter jet was shot down by Yellow 13, the Erusians top fighter pilot, and a member of their Yellow Squadron (the Erusian equivalent of the ISAF Mobius Squadron). As he is forced to move into a nearby occupied town, he befriends Yellow 13 after meeting him and the other Yellow Squadron members in a bar.

Ace Combat 3

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/ac3/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

The plot, taking place in the distant future, revolves around a war between a group of corporations fighting over territorial disputes, and eventually a prototype fighter known as the X-49 Night Raven. During a period of financial chaos, the many governments of the world have eroded to nothing but corporatocracies. These corporations, not unlike the governments they control, have disputes often, and eventually a war is sparked.

General Resource LTD. is a successful company, formed through a merger of many worldwide financial assets. It was once Gründer Industries, a military corporation found in Ace Combat 5. Focusing on the domination of common products, General Resource is always in constant disagreement with Neucom. A massive corporate war was sparked when General Resource's armed forces engaged fire with Neucom's forces. General Resources has a para-military force called General Resources Defence Force (GRDF). Abyssal Dision and Keith Brian are members of the GRDF.

The UPEO (Universal Peace Enforcement Organization) is a military organization controlled by the Neo United Nations (NUN) and originally a General Resource puppet, ultimately dedicated to stopping the corporate war. However, it is referred as a paper tiger, since it requires weapons from the corporations to support itself. UPEO is supervised by NUN General Secretary Gabriel Clarkson. UPEO's military arm is the Special Armed Response Force (SARF). The main characters, Rena Hirose, Fiona Fitzgerald, and Erich Jaeger are members of the SARF. Gilbert Park is the commander of the UPEO and SARF. However, he is distrusted by almost every character in the game. (reason of which later revealed) After all hell breaks loose at the near the end of the game, main character and Erich decide to take the battle to Park in order to save the UPEO from corruption and stop the Ouroboros, while trying to save Rena from her cruel fate.

Neucom Inc. is a generally struggling corporation that focuses on progress through technological advances. It was once the Erusian Air and Space Administration (EASA), a corporation found in Ace Combat 04. Formed by a group of defecting scientists from General Resource and a former government agency, Neucom has similarities to real-life defense contractor McDonnell Douglas. Neucom's para-military force is named Neucom Emergency Unit (NEU) and it's the only side that uses its own design aircraft. Cynthia Fitzgerald is a member of the NEU (as is her sister Fiona, defecting along with the main character if player wishes, in the later missions). For some reason, Neucom is named Neuwork in the seriously downgraded English versions of AC3.

Ouroboros is a mysterious terrorist organization formed from members of all units, with its own shadowy agenda. According to the story, Abyssal Dision seems to be its lead pilot and executive officer while Gilbert Park, commander of the UPEO, is actually its leader, operating behind the scenes. Cynthia (and main character, if player wishes) later join Ouroboros for unknown reasons although she later realizes the madness behind the organization's true intentions and decides to escape. In the game, the player mostly flies F16 and F22 in 2 missions. The player fights against Mig 21(s), Mig 29(s), F15(s), F16(s), F18(s), Su 27, A10(s), Mirage 2000(s), Tornado(s) etc.

The missions are very interesting ranging from Flying as an Escort, bombing bases, tanks, buildings, bridges, ships, Oil Rigs etc. In one mission, the player has to steal F22. Bombing of a nuclear power plant mission is a personal mission to take revenge for Stern's death
The game offers three training missions viz. SEARCH & DESTROY, DOG FIGHT AND GAUNTLET.

In search and destroy missions the player equips the plane with bombs and
destroys various ground targets.

In the Dog fight mode, the player chooses the number of planes, the type of planes and the altitude at which to fight.

In gauntlet, the player is surrounded by enemy planes to test how long the player will survive in a dog fight with multiple boogies. Gauntlet mode is very interesting because the player has to fight against all the planes that the player will come across in the actual missions. The game has kill board which displays the number of ground and air targets killed by the player and other squad members.

Empyreal Nocturne

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/empyrealnocturne/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Empyreal Nocturne is a 3D aerial action game in which you combat enormous flying monsters by commanding a legion of birds.
Each flying monster, called Hydra, is a series of nodes connected together. You must defeat each weak point node to destroy the entire monster.

The design of the game is influenced by "Shadow of the Colossus". You battle enormous creatures that initially appear to be insurmountable. It is also partially inspired by "Rez" in the sense that they are both non-traditional, abstract shooter games.

Operation: Inner Space

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/innerspace/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Operation: Inner Space is one of those very special games. It's unfortunate that such a fine piece of code has been abandoned.

The main idea behind Inner Space is to travel through your computer in a space ship collecting Icons. Icons in game are taken straight from the files on your disk and are spent as the game's currency. Icons are used to buy upgrades for your ship, new weapons, and also to pay off the in-game police if you get arrested.

The game world itself is actually a space environment. The space is usually filled with rocks, and other hazards such as blocks that shoot fire, spinning fans, turrets, and others.

Virii are present in the game. Virii shoot lightning bolts which can infect icons floating in space. If an infected icon is picked up by your ship you will lose control briefly. A virus is also a tough hazard to destroy, but CPU ships, friendly or not, will often help you, and thank for you destroying one.

The AI in the game is well-done, each CPU ship in the game has its own personality and is assigned to a team. Your relations with the various teams in game and theres with eachother, will depend upon your actions. Each team has its own motive for being in Inner Space. The Enforcers are the police in the game and will attempt to arrest you or anyone that breaks the laws. If you resist arrest, the Enforcers will attempt to destroy your ship. In contrast, the Pirates are always out to destroy your ship so they can loot your goods, as well as cause trouble with the Enforcers.

The various in game laws can be broken, and without consenquence if an Enforcer is not present. Laws include things such as, looting a ship, attacking a fleeing ship, wreckless boosting, stealing a prize from a race winner, attacking an enforcer, and so on.

The game features various modes beyond the typical fly-and-collect-icons gameplay. You can engage in a duel with a rival in the arena, and race your ship against others in various tracks.

The goal of the game is not to collect all your icons, as with today's machines and the amount of data upon them it's not really feasable. Instead, you need to collect the four noble weapons from the Inner Demon and eventually enter the Demon's Gate using the noble weapons to defeat...

The games weapons are varied, besides your ships standard guns, you can make use of fireballs, snowballs, batterys, heat-seeker missles, handcuffs, donuts, protective pellets, dumb-fire missles, and many more. The noble weapons have the most powerful abilities, which are collected from random battles with the Inner Demon.

If you play the game at different times of the day, the enviroment will change. For example, the computer that greets you at the start of the game will display different messages, and if played during lunch, gas cans are replaced with food items.

The Amulance can be called in game, it's used to buy weapons, repair and refuel your ship, and play a practice battle against the Inner Demon. It can also save you from near death if you hail it when your ship is burning.

The game also features a ship editor in which you can customize a ship, and even import a graphic to make an original one. Inner Space includes a screensaver also. There are two-different shareware versions of the game, one gives you 30 days to play and then locks you out. Another, gives you 30 days to play and after the time period lets you only play as a specific ship from the Avengers. An in-game keystroke lets you assume control of a team member's ship however, so you can use this to get a better craft, even one you made in the editor.

In Jagdgeschwader two people can select from different WWII airplanes and then are pitted against each other till death. There are different scenarios, different planes, bonus crates to pick up and much more.
It included ten user-flyable aircraft in total, and several new features.

One of the most significant new features was the new weather engine. Before a flight the user could generate and manipulate weather fronts, which would then change dynamically while flying. The simulator also included the Raytheon Beechjet 400A. In previous versions, only small- to medium-sized propeller-powered aircraft were included. The Beechjet added a fast jet to the line-up, with a glass cockpit, GPS, an autopilot and a working weather radar using the new weather engine.

As with Flight Unlimited II, the simulator concentrated on one small but highly detailed part of the USA, in this version Seattle. It was once again sourced from USGS satellite photos and real-life elevation data. Outside of the Seattle area, covering more of the Pacific West, was a less detailed area called the outer terrain region.

Other features from Flight Unlimited II include 3d cockpits (although still without working dials), more realistic crashes, water landings, challenges and flight lessons.

If the user had Flight Unlimited II, the high-resolution San Francisco scenery could be installed, making flights between there and the high-resolution Seattle area possible.

The simulator also came with a program called the Flight Unlimited Editor (FLED), which allowed the user to edit the simulator's scenery. This is still one of this simulator's great strengths - it has a free, built-in scenery editor. Anybody can create their own airport, scenery package or just place a few model objects wherever they want. If saved as a scenery 'package', users can upload to the internet (via Avsim.com or similar) and other users can share in the experience. One user (Chris Low from the UK) has created huge super-sets of packages covering entire regions. These substantially improve the flying experience. There are also currently hundreds of extra models available for users to experiment with.

Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/AceCombat5/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Sand Island military base in the middle of the Ceres Ocean, dividing the two superpowers Osea and Yuktobania. A single wizard used a spell that was too powerful to try to fix everything and instead shattered the world. You play as his only apprentice and are trying to set everything correct again. You do this by fighting monsters, and corrupted wizards from a magic carpet.

As you progress through the game you gain more and more powerful spells, yet you also must fight more opponents at the same time. The goal is to destroy the enemy wizard which will leave his castle vulnerable. Then you need to destroy his castle.

This game was extremely innovative for its time, and implemented things that to this day are still not implemented into games very well. It pioneered dynamically lighted terrain that could be morphed in real-time with spells. If you cast volcano the ground would rip open and a huge volcano would form morphing and effecting everything around it. In addition water reflected the environment, there was distance fog, transparency, and even particle effects.
Via an editor, you can add different enhancements to it, like new engines, rudders or cannons. In 40 missions you have to battle other fortresses and fullfill various mission objectives.

Stratosphere Conquest of the Skies from Ripcord / Panasonic Interactive Media Between cannon volleys, you look around the deck of your floatstone vessel. You remember stories of ancient battleships that waged war in the waters of planet Earth in the 20th century. Only now, the mighty rock fortresses float 6,000 feet off the surface of this remote planet - magnetically repelled by the planet's core. A blinding flash of light and heat snaps you back to reality. Your opponent's long-range doom cannons have crippled your starboard dragstone launcher and are pounding your defenses. Think...THINK! You've got to figure out a plan to take out this juggernaut - before it does the same to you. You start the repairs. You quickly commence building mode and replace your arc projectors with creep mine racks and additional thrusters. The improved speed helps you evade some of the blasts while you drop creep mines in a circle around your enemy. He can't avoid them all, and slowly, your foe's defenses are eaten away. You're still taking heavy damage, but your well-armored energy plant and added thrust jets spare you from the brunt of the attack. When your enemy's last cannon erupts in flames, you move in for the kill. You accelerate and ram your defenseless opponent. The collision topples your foe's exposed command tower - a fatal blow. Seconds later, an explosion showers your vessel with barbecued floatstone. All remaining resources are quickly dedicated to replacing lost battlements and repairing the extensive damage. Settling the nerves of your crew is another matter...

1942-plane attack

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/1942planes/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

This is a shoot em up sidescrolling game. It is a time of chaos in the Empire. Rebel factions strike from hidden bases, pirates plunder unsuspecting civilian spacecraft, and traitors plot behind the Emperor's back. You, a rookie pilot in the Imperial Navy, must rise to action for the glory of the Empire and the good of all mankind.

The player's character is unnamed (however, in sources outside the game, name is Maarek Stele), but features such notable Star Wars characters as: Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, and even Admiral Thrawn from the books.

Star Wars: TIE Fighter is somewhat of a sequal to Star Wars: X-Wing, however this time the player is the "bad guy." With various objectives ranging from destroying pirates and Rebels to flying wingman for Darth Vader himself, TIE Fighter offers a great deal of enjoyment for those who love the Star Wars universe.

Gameplay involves managing your weapons/engine/shield (if available) systems while dogfighting enemy spacecraft or attacking larger capital spaceships. Additionally, missiles are limited (if even available), so must be used carefully. Because this is the side of the Empire, the fighters you will be flying initially are very vulnerable to damage. Two or three hits to your TIE Fighter and you're toast, and destroying shielded enemy Rebel fighters in such a craft can be challenging.

Mission objectives are crucial to completing stages of the game, and advancing the storyline. Additionally, there are optional bonus objectives, which influence the secondary advancement in the Emperor's secret order.

Aces of the Pacific

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/acesofthepacific/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Truman said,
We must work to finish the war. Blastforce is a freeware top-down shooter set in the year 2917. It is being developed with the Gamemaker 6.1 (but may be changed to GM 7.0 in the future). I have been working on the idea behind it for about 10 years (the story behind it was originally written by me as a hobby). Currently, the game is being developed by myself and a friend (with another helping me with my concept artwork). We still have quite a lot to do still!

Features

In the game you will be able to fly a wide variety of aircraft- interceptors, bombers, space-helicopters, and even the odd go on the gun turret. There will also be a number of ground-based missions in the game. The game's graphics are (or will be) in a anime-ish, super nintendo kind of style.

Situation

The game is still in early stages, and newcomers are welcome. At the moment we need:
-Coders
-Pixel artists
-Manga artists

There are also other jobs available. Please leave me a message if you are interested.

Microsoft Flight Simulator X

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/fsx/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Flight Simulator X will awe flight simulator fans and real pilots alike. Long heralded by fans as the epitome of the genre, it was also sadly one of the last truly great games of its type.

In the game, you play as an anonymous pilot of the Terran Alliance, fighting for galactic peace. However, the plot quickly turns, as it appears that the Shivan threat (thought defeated in Freespace: the Great War) has returned.

The gameplay is mission based, with each mission giving you a set of often-changing objectives to be accomplished ranging from interception to recon to patrol. Just like others in the genre, the game takes place completely from the cockpit of your ship, although your ships and the scale of the forces you command change over the course of the game -- eventually orchestrating full fighter wing engagements.

The game has an amazing plot and beautifully rendered enviroments, with a truly epic sense of scale. Couple that with an intense and fun multiplayer experience, and you have one grand game in your hands.

Terminal Velocity

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/Terminal-Velocity/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Earth sends you as the pilot of it's finest spacecraft to defend against aliens that were once your allies.
Written by Mark Randel of Terminal Reality, Inc, the lead programmer of Microsoft Flight Simulator 5.0, Terminal Velocity was the first game ever to be released by 3D Realms, the 3-d game division of Apogee. TRI would soon after release Duke Nukem 3D.

Originally available on floppy disks or CD, the disk version was discontinued in March of 1997. Terminal Reality later made two sequels to Terminal Velocity, both for Windows, both distributed by Microsoft: Fury3 in 1995, and Hellbender in 1996. In late 1995, there was also a Fury3 add-on pack called F-Zone. Fury3, Hellbender, and F-Zone have all been since discontinued by Microsoft.
It was released by Electronic Arts and Ingram Entertainment for the Mega Drive/Genesis.

The player controls one aircraft, the F-22 Raptor, throughout the game. At that time, the real aircraft was known as the YF-22 Lightning II, and had only first flown in 1990. Like LHX Attack Chopper, another flight simulator by EA, the playable aircraft had not yet been developed.

The player has three skill levels to choose from: Cadet, Training, and Combat. The player must then pick one of four campaigns: the USA, Korea, Iraq, and Russia. In each level, the player's F-22 is targeted by surface-to-air missiles, enemy aircraft, and artillery. The mission is to destroy the targets and complete the objectives using a wide range of missiles, from heat seeking missiles, precision-guided bombs, and chaffs. The aircraft is also given two cannons for engaging enemy targets.

At the end of each mission, the player is required to either land on a runway or an aircraft carrier. Sometimes in-flight refueling is needed to prevent the F-22 from crashing.

As the game progresses, the player will be able to unlock an Aces campaign, where he will face off with advanced pilots from North Korea, Iraq, Russia, and the US.

The game also had a rudimentary mission editor.

Orbiter

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/orbiter/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Orbiter is a free flight simulator that goes beyond the confines of Earth's atmosphere. Launch the Space Shuttle from Kennedy Space Center to deploy a satellite, rendezvous with the International Space Station or take the futuristic Delta-glider for a tour through the solar system - the choice is yours.

But make no mistake, Orbiter is not a space shooter. The emphasis is firmly on realism, and the learning curve can be steep. Be prepared to invest some time and effort to brush up on your orbital mechanics background. Good starting points are JPL's Basics of Space Flight, and R. Braeunig's Rocket & Space Technology.

Aerial Antics

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/AerialAntics/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Navigate 50 levels with your personal jet propulsion device!
