This game manages to take the well-known mythology surrounding the story and focused on the war in the North between the elves, dwarves, goblins, and Mordor forces that is only touched upon in the book and is left out completely in the movies. LORD OF THE RINGS: THE BATTLE FOR MIDDLE EARTH II plays out much like the game of Risk in that players must move their armies around a board that is covered in territories. Players will find that this new battle between good and evil takes place on a much grander scale with six different factions combining to against the forces of Mordor. Players can also combine forces in multiplayer mode to get the most out of the fights. This ability to customize the fighting options makes for a great game no matter what type of mood the player is in. All of these factors make playing the second installment in the Battle for Middle Earth series just as exciting and entertaining as the first time around, without the worry that players will just be repeating the game in a different format. The most notable difference to the first two games is that there are no more roads - all units, including carriers with goods, can walk around freely. A whole new dimension will be added to the game by using virtual agents. Agents are freelancers available for hire who help a player during the game. Each agent has different abilities (they can help with research, unit commands, increasing mining efficiency, spying out enemies, stealing technology etc.) Agents can be hired and fired during the game. Hiring agents is done during an auction where different players can make their bids for the agent. This creates an opportunity to economically defeat an opponent by raising the price of the agent he wants to hire. Each agent remembers his old contracts with the player. The History of old contracts has a strong influence on the price of the agent. A player has to take care of his hired agents otherwise they may not want to work for him in the future. Agents also have relationships between each other. They can like, dislike, love or hate other agents. Those relationships also have influence on the price of a contract with an agent.

Knight Shift

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/knightshift/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

 Story

In a distant land, long, long ago there once lived a prince, he was righteous and just, noble and honourable by nature and above all evil. Dark and treacherous powers joined together to spread evil over the land and to banish the prince from the principality and the thoughts of the people. Then because of an unsuccessful spell from the despicable lords the prince was banished to another dimension, but not from the memory and hearts of the people. Some years later, through the opening of a portal between dimensions by a good hearted magician, the prince was able to return to his principality. The task then was to drive out the evil lords from power and to allow peace and order to return. A bitter fight against the powers of evil is now imminent...
The Single Player RTS part of the game consists of three addictive, story driven campaigns. Each of them takes place in a different geographical area and bounds you every minute with new challenges like rescuing a kidnapped Princess or fighting a ferocious Dragon - or combat with nasty, ugly, smelly monsters and the bones of the walking dead. During the campaigns the player develops his characters and gains access to new weapons, special armour and magic items. He also has the possibility of creating new characters or building new structures. Additionally, an extensive RPG mode surprises with an even larger selection of maps, quests, weapons and enemies, plus a highly improved character development. For RTS fans and friends of massive multiplayer battles, several RTS skirmish and MP modes guarantee endless hours of exciting gameplay.

Earth 2150

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/earth2150/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

The first all-terrain, 3D real-time strategy game has landed on American shores.
The game isn't a direct entry on the series, but rather a spin off based on the cold war between US and Russia coupled with a sci fi twist.

The game introduces funny characters that make a lot of funny moments while you're playing it. You'll meet megalomaniac Yuri, the heroic Tanya, the goofy Romanov and the very standard president of the United States, along with a very funny set of other characters.

The game is standard RTS gameplay on steroids(for its time anyway), it's fast paced, and although the strategy involves often more brute force than the strategy part, the action and the range of things you can do more than make up for it.

You can start by selecting your outfit, the allies or the soviets, who in this game are a super power taking over the world thanks to psychological technology developer by Yuri.

Depending on the side you take, you'll have a select army very balanced against your enemy, with the Russians being strong with units like specialized tanks, soldiers and general ground forces whereas the allies have strong air forces and other bonuses.

The game has a high and addictive fun factor, which means that if you're in college or have to work early in the morning it's not recommendable to set your hands in this game as you'll easily see yourself playing up to 8 hours of it. It's simply that good, so if you happen to not have played it and you have a copy nearby, fret not and pick it up. It was first released in November 2002, by Microsoft Game Studios. Following both good reviews and sales, Age of Mythology: The Titans expansion pack was released in 2003. Although it is a continuation of the Age of Empires series, Age of Mythology focuses less on historical accuracy, instead centering around the myths and legends of the Ancient Greeks, the Ancient Egyptians, and the Norse.

Age of Mythology is different from other Ensemble Studios games because it takes place in a Pantheistic solipsistic universe. Unlike previous Age of Empires games, which followed the historical progress of various nations or cultures, "Age of Mythology" follows the exploits of a band of heroes, in an adventure that takes them through all three civilizations.

Taking on the role of one of nine ancient civilizations, players guide their people to greatness by commanding all aspects of their empire: gathering resources, raising massive armies, waging war against enemies, establishing profitable trade routes, building new settlements, enhancing production or military might with improvements, exploring new frontiers, and advancing through four distinct ages.

In their struggle for supremacy, players can use mythological creatures like Minotaurs and Cyclopses to bolster their armies' strength. Players may also call upon the gods for assistance in flattening enemy towns with meteors or scattering opposing troops with lightning storms.

All of this is brought to life using a revolutionary 3D engine developed by Ensemble Studios. The engine is capable of providing the most realistic, beautiful, and immersive world ever seen in a real-time strategy game.

Euclidean Crisis

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/euclideancrisis/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Euclidean Crisis is a multiplayer real-time strategy game played using a touchscreen stylus and voice commands. The game can also be played with a mouse.

Players control a diverse team of units on a two-dimensional battlefield, and must destroy their opponents' energy cores while protecting their own. Players tell units where to go by drawing out paths, and give orders using special gestures and voice activated commands. The game is rendered in a retro aesthetic featuring simple shapes (hence the origin of the title) in a world with colorful, psychedelic visual effects synced to the music.

Command and Conquer Renegade

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/ccrenegade/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

It's an RTS, but nobody has an overhead view. Everyone is a soldier. Online Multiplayer is the core fun of this game and it does that well.

GDI fights NOD and both teams start with a complete base. The base has buildings for vehicles, power, resource collection, character upgrades, and defense. The objective is to destroy the other team's base.

Players go about it by killing enemies, destroying the other team's (automated) resource collector, or by healing allies. Whenever a player does any of these things they earn money for themselves and that's what makes Renegade so interesting. There's nobody managing the team or overseeing everything from above. It all works because players are rewarded for being effective. Player income is used at the base for upgraded weapons or vehicles.

Phantom Dust

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/phantomdust/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

The developers must have been obsessed with Magic: the Gathering, Soul Caliber, and Unreal Tournament. It's played from an over-the-shoulder camera in 1v1 or 2v2 matches. Player's freely run around large environments collecting resource balls and locking onto enemies. Each time is resource ball is collected it's like drawing a new card from a CCG deck. Player's always have 4 of these "cards" in hand - one mapped to each face button. Most are attacks, but some others are defensive or allow moves like super jumps.

Combat is all about locking onto an enemy and firing at them once they're in the optimal range for your spell. You also need to carefully time your defensive spells to counter their attacks and keep moving to find more orbs and refresh your spell pool. The environments are destructible so destroying the bridge under your enemy is a lot of fun.

Between battles the game is all about customizing your pool of spells and acquiring new spells. Like a CCG there's tons of combinations and strategies.

Your character choices are: a jetpack-loving British-ish alien, a semi-mermaid sorceress/archer, or an incredibly huge roaring monster that eats everything. All of them are a lot of fun and you play as each during the game's campaign.

Gameplay is usually third-person shooting, but there's also resource collection, base-building, and even some vehicle races.

The most unusual thing about Giants is that it tries to be funny - and is funny! Don't skip the cut-scenes on this one.

Multiplayer supports large games with different modes. The most common is base vs base where each team tries to collect the most resources (brainy smarties) and destroy the enemy teams's base before it can be rebuilt. Resources are spent on buildings for weapon upgrades, base defense, and vehicle production. One player can be the giant Kabuto who's almost impossible to take down.

Age Of Empires DS

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/aoeds/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Age of Empires: The Age of Kings ® for the Nintendo DS is based on the best-selling PC RTS title of all time: Age of Empires ® II: The Age of Kings. SunAge runs on an indie developed engine that had been in development in-house at Vienna based Vertex4 for some time; recently the transfer to Direct X 9 has been made, resulting in better looking environments and vastly improved effects.

The Settlers: Heritage of Kings

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/TheSettlersHeritageofKings/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

 From the Developer's web site:
Exerpts from the FAQ:

The Settlers: Heritage of Kings still is very much about building up an economy. Affectionately made animations and a living environment have consequently been a part of the series. The player still can just sit back during the game and watch the busy little settlers doing their work.

It was important to us that the Settlers Saga evolves further. Therefore there have been several changes since The Settlers 3 and 4 including the new graphics style, the 3D environment, a storyline and the heroes.

That is also the reason why we do not speak of The Settlers 5 but of the Heritage of Kings.

WarCommander

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/WarCommander/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

 From the Developer's web site:
The Battle for Middle Earth is surprising in that it takes some bold steps to change the RTS standard fare with a very high profile franchise. Most notably, the system for creating buildings and your base in general is very different from the RTS standard. Many people don't care for it, and it was in fact revised for the sequel. Whether that change bothers you or not, the game is enjoyable and also introduces a high-level campaign map which adds another level of tactics and decision making for the player.

Codename: Panzers Phase Two

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/codenamepanzersphasetwo/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

 From the Developer's website:
This game was purchased on the strength of the first title, Codename: Panzers, Phase One. Having only played a few missions, the first impression is that it is solidly more of the same well-crafted gameplay as seen in the original title.

Codename: Panzers Phase One

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/codenamepanzersphaseone/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

 From the Official web site:

Codename: Panzers Phase One is a very satisfying RTS overall. There are a variety of mission styles and objectives and you can play through from 2 different sides. There is the occasional mission that doesn't makse sense or is frustrating, but by and large the experience is entertaining. It might not satisfy a die-hard RTS player, but is enjoyable for casual fans of the genre.

Homeworld 2

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/homeworld2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Homeworld 2 is the sequel to award winning 3D real-time strategy game from developer Relic Entertainment.
Deep under the central desert of Kronus, a vast honeycomb of skull-lined tunnels and funereal chambers house the awakening mass of the Necron plague. Eons ago, these were the boulevards and squares of a great necropolis built to house the bones of the races who had fallen to the Necron purge, and ultimately for the Necron themselves to retire to. Over the millions of years, sand and rock had covered it all until ill-fated excavations awoke the deathless again. Play any of seven races, striving for control over Kronus. Take other races' strongholds by winning challenging battles on various maps individually associated with the respective Strongholds.
