It is closely tied to the Origin Ultima V RPG.

Created originally by eggmceye to be a rogue-like game named Balrog in 1998, it was quickly turned into an Ultima-like game with the discovery of an Ultima 4 tileset created by Josh Steele, giving the game its retro feel. Over the past nine years, it has slowly evolved into an online RPG with a small but growing fanbase spanning two servers, each one incorporating slighty different gameplay.

In those nine years, the game has grown from a four player only server to one that incorporates a full Ultima V magic system, including the Runic alphabet, crafting and creature taming. It also contains numerous easter eggs in tribute to NetHack.

PlaneShift

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/planeshift/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

PlaneShift is a cross-platform, open source, and free MMORPG in development.
Yet through it all, its robust people have woven a rich tapestry and, with the aid of a staunch belief in their almighty, overseeing gods and pharaoh, they constructed a civilization unlike any other in all antiquity. Relive a time when greatness was born not of weapons and armor, but of productivity and solidarity. Do you have what it takes to rise above the hardships you will face?

Its setting of historically real Ancient Egypt is not the only aspect which makes A Tale in the Desert III unique among MMOGs. It also lacks combat, focusing instead on socioeconomics as a path to character advancement. Created long before the Internet MMO, LORD was a BBS door game that involved true multiplayer interaction.

Though some limited MUDs and door games had multiplayer support before this point, few enjoyed the popularity and longevity of LORD.
The game also featured a primitive Mod capability, where crafty Sysops could develop their own additions to the game.

Second Life

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/secondlife/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Second Life is a 3D digital world imagined, created and owned by its residents.
These portals were used by royalty, travelers, merchants, peasants... anyone that had need to travel from one world to another could use them.

Whomever, whatever, however they were created was lost through the ages. Everyone believed that since the portals had existed since the beginning of time then they would last until the end of time. But then things changed.

Nobody knows exactly what happened. The disappearance of the portals are as much a mystery as their origins. The portals didn't all disappear at once. No, as my great-great grandfather tells it, it took about a year until the last known portal from this world to another was gone. The year was called the Year of Chaos.
