Launch the Space Shuttle from Kennedy Space Center to deploy a satellite, rendezvous with the International Space Station or take the futuristic Delta-glider for a tour through the solar system - the choice is yours.

But make no mistake, Orbiter is not a space shooter. The emphasis is firmly on realism, and the learning curve can be steep. Be prepared to invest some time and effort to brush up on your orbital mechanics background. Good starting points are JPL's Basics of Space Flight, and R. Welcome to Really Rather Good Battles In Space - a space based real time strategy game for Windows and Linux.

By pressing the spacebar, you activate the gravity drive of your craft and create an attractive force between yourself and the other objects in the game. You raise your shields just in time, and the battle is joined.

The deadliest stretch of space known to mankind has just gotten deadlier. Everywhere massive asteroids jostle for a chance to crush your ship, and deadly shinobi fighter patrols pursue you across the asteroid belt. But the deadliest of them all is your sister ship, assigned to you on patrol. The pilot, trained by your own Navy, battle hardened by months in the Maelstrom, is equipped with a twin of your own ship and intimate knowledge of your tactics.
You must survive for as long as possible, dodging ever increasing swarms of spiky balls and spinning things that shoot at you. It's a take on retro gameplay, using hardware accelerated rendering to handle the huge swarms.

The game was developed in just 34 hours for the Ludumdare 48 hour game programming competition. Since then, a score counter has been added, along with a couple of extra graphics, but the game remains very bare-bones.
If you can't tolerate the sound effects, just rename the sound directory. This shooter features power-ups and is highly detailed, combining nostalgia with 24-bit color. Four levels have 100 waves of ships. Destroy 15 enemies with 13 power-ups. You can play in windowed and full-screen modes; then show off your skills to the world with Web-based high scores. Your ship can be controlled with the mouse, which comes in handy when you're trying to dodge enemy fire. The Gold version features a new interface and a massive list of bug fixes.
