The core game engine is released under the GPL License; however, the prepackaged mod that comes with the standard installation requires that one own a copy of TA to legally play it. There is, however, an official release which uses fully free content, and there are a number of mods, both in development and released, that are also completely free to use.

Spring is being developed by the Swedish Yankspankers and the Spring community. The initial goal was to have the game run the mods and 3rd party units from Total Annihilation. This goal is now mostly complete, and the project has moved on to including additional features. The game is mainly focused around multiplayer games over the Internet or a LAN connection. There are currently no single player campaigns or missions, although there is some basic support for this through Lua scripting. There are also many skirmish AIs under development, allowing for offline play or extra players in an online game. TS: Hyperbol is a game viewed Top-Down over a flat playing-field as you take control of a Ship that you customize in order to destroy your opponents. Game Types include Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill, Spawn Capture, Attack/Defend Objectives, and more to be added later with a Map editor.
Your ship functions more like a Battleship, as it is stationary most of the time, a Turret that you can move occasionally across the map into strategically key positions, or simply to dodge incoming fire. The farther you move, the long you have to wait to move again. Or, you can customize your ship to recharge it's fuel rapidly if you wish to use a more active flighty Ship.
There are 6 Weapon modules that will produce the weapons you use. Your factory can hold up to 6 Mods total, so if you want more of 1 type, you have to forgo access to another. Having more then 1 will make production of that type faster, and allow you to hold more in your max stock. Each Mod will produce several different projectiles, for example the basic 'Ballistics' mod will give you access to Energy Bolts, Missiles, and Shrapnel Bombs. Also, once you have build a total of 6 Mods, you have the option to Upgrade 1 of them into a lv. 2 Super version. All the weapons made by this super Mod are either upgraded, or totally new versions of the weapon. As the above example, the Bolts do extra damage, the Missiles become MIRV Packs, and the Shrapnel Bombs become Shrapnel Wedges, which fires all it's shards in a cone instead of in all directions.

Fractured Universe

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/FracturedUniverse/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Ages ago, the universes were all connected through fantastic portals created, some say, by the gods themselves. Set in a world known as Agon, it features six playable races. This organization pushed scientific progress and planetary colonization forward until the human race covered almost the entire galaxy. Ironically, it was the Core's final triumph against mortality that would prove to be its undoing, for when the Core mandated uploading all peoples' brain patterns into machines in a method known as "patterning," there was a massive rebellion from the Arm (named after their location, an arm of the spiral galaxy), an organization which banded together from the edges of the galaxy and demanded to keep their physical bodies. A war like no other began, which has since raged on for four thousand years. The Core copy their finest warriors' brains into fighting robots, and the Arm respond with cloning and powerful manned units.

Half-Life 2: Episode 1

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/halflifeep1/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

 The Story Continues

Description:
Worms: Armageddon is a turn based strategy game in a 2d environment. There is a single player campaign, and training missions to complete; but the main attraction is playing against other people locally or over the internet. Games can be played with 2 or more people. The graphics and sound are very cartoonish, and entertaining.

Gameplay:
Each player starts with a number of worms on their team. Each worm has a fixed amount of health. If a worm runs out of health, it will die. Once you run out of worms, you lose the match. The game is turn based, so each team gets control of one worm during their turn. You have a limited amount of time to select one of many weapons and inflict damage on another teams worm. There are also other more subtle tools to choose from for more strategic play, such as terrain digging tools, girder construction, and ropes and other means to get around the map. Weapons vary from the ordinary guns and explosives, to odd things like exploding sheep, mad cows, and homing pigeons.

There are several other popular gameplay types, with specific rules for play.

Finding online games is easy when you log onto WormNet. It's an irc-like chat interface where you can host or join games.

Diablo 2

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/diablo2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Since the beginning of time, the forces of Order and Chaos have been engaged in an eternal struggle to decide the fate of all Creation. Through pollution and war the world's main populace survives in fortified mega-metropolises referred to as citadels scattered throughout uninhabitable wastelands. In 2200 when the U.E.C was first formed the decision was taken to only take those who were most important to society into the protection of the citadels.

Although many live happy lives in the serenity of the citadels and with ignorance that over half the world's population lives in turmoil, outside life is a harsh experience, many have died in the inhospitable environment but for those that have survived so far evolution has "gifted" them with something special, unknown to the U.E.C those left outside were not the only life that survived. At different locations around the world life has re-emerged stronger than before with new species of plants and animals flourishing in independent eco-systems. These are a haven for those left outside and are their means of survival.

The past is not easily forgotten though and inevitably the two divisions of humans would obviously not co-exist peacefully. The war is just about to begin, the U.E.C is unaware of what is about to unfold but tension is rising after transports between citadels have gone missing. The outcasts plan for revenge is in motion...

The Sides:

U.E.C Military/Security forces:

The U.E.C seeks to finish off what they started and destroy what is left of any resistance to its rule. The U.E.C arsenal is composed of conventional ballistic weaponry with a few elite soldiers wielding the newly developed energy weapons.
The Outcasts:

The Outcasts seek revenge against their brethren; motivated by this they have spent many years planning for their revenge. They seek to change the earth to a world full of jungles and devoid of technology or cities with humanity living alongside nature. The Outcasts of course cannot wage a war with weapons made from wood and stone, instead they utilize the "gifts" given to them by evolution to destroy their foes, and so with a variety of hand to hand combat, enhanced reflexes and elemental forces to help them along they are a deadly adversary to any U.E.C force.

iKonquest

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/ikonquest/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

iKonquest is a simple turn-based strategy multiplayer game of galactic conquest. Both players get 7 pawns and 1 king on a 8x8 board. The goal is to get your opponent's king or 6 of his pawns. Each turn, the player may select 1 stone and move it straight or in an L-bow. You cannot jump over stones, but you can step onto your opponent's stone to take it. The numbers on your stones indicate the number of tiles they can move in a turn. When the Mastermind option is selected, the stones change in value when you move it. Pawns can get numbers 1-4, while the king only gets 1 or 2. A challenging game!

Setting the Mastermind option (to change the alue of your stones each move) will show numbers on the board so you will know the number you will get when you move a stone there.

This games comes with 5 imaginary friends of fine-tuned artificial intelligence to play offline against your computer.

Galcon

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/galcon/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Galcon is an awesome high-paced multi-player galactic action-strategy game.
