Deep under the central desert of Kronus, a vast honeycomb of skull-lined tunnels and funereal chambers house the awakening mass of the Necron plague. Eons ago, these were the boulevards and squares of a great necropolis built to house the bones of the races who had fallen to the Necron purge, and ultimately for the Necron themselves to retire to. Over the millions of years, sand and rock had covered it all until ill-fated excavations awoke the deathless again. Play any of seven races, striving for control over Kronus. It is one of the most advanced RTS's to date, with a highly detailed, fully destructable world, and its own physics engine, and complete camera control, players of this game can feel involved like never before. The level of realism in the game means that unlike most other RTS's, the tactical use of your units is more important than simply outnumbering the enemy.

The campaign mode follows the allies following the assault at Normandy. The missions are nicely varied in objectives and game style, with badges to collect as bonusses at each level.

Online, you can play both tournament style and casually, with a max of 4v4. The maps are varied nicely, meaning players need to adapt their style of play to each one. Each map can be played as either annihilation, where the objective is the destroy the enemy, or as victory point, where players can also win by holding points for a length of time.

The online section of the game also includes a community with news updates, chatrooms and a buddies system.

Command & Conquer The First Decade

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/cnctfd/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Command & Conquer: The First Decade was announced on November 4th, 2005 and was released on February 7 2006. The core game engine is released under the GPL License; however, the prepackaged mod that comes with the standard installation requires that one own a copy of TA to legally play it. There is, however, an official release which uses fully free content, and there are a number of mods, both in development and released, that are also completely free to use.

Spring is being developed by the Swedish Yankspankers and the Spring community. The initial goal was to have the game run the mods and 3rd party units from Total Annihilation. This goal is now mostly complete, and the project has moved on to including additional features. The game is mainly focused around multiplayer games over the Internet or a LAN connection. There are currently no single player campaigns or missions, although there is some basic support for this through Lua scripting. There are also many skirmish AIs under development, allowing for offline play or extra players in an online game. And that's it. The game might initially rekindle nostalgic childhood memories of playing with plastic toy soldiers, thanks to its clean graphics and its variety of authentic-looking World War II military units. However, Sudden Strike's simplistic, straightforward gameplay prevents the game from staying interesting for very long.

Despite how it looks, Sudden Strike is not a realistic war simulation. There may be a superficial resemblance to the Close Combat series, but Sudden Strike doesn't attempt to model any of the factors - weapon lethality, vehicle armor thickness, and unit morale - that made Close Combat a real-time wargame. Sudden Strike takes the conventional 2D isometric real-time strategy perspective and, instead of filling it with aliens or futuristic tanks, fills it with the sights and sounds of World War II. It's an interesting setting, and it gives a great first impression. However, though the graphics are superficially attractive, it can be somewhat difficult to discern different infantry types, especially behind obstacles. Nevertheless, the game does superbly reproduce a number of historical units, and this helps give Sudden Strike its realistic appearance. But that realism doesn't carry through to the gameplay, which would be fine if the gameplay had something else to recommend it. Unfortunately, it doesn't.

Galcon

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/galcon/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Galcon is an awesome high-paced multi-player galactic action-strategy game. Each match is a war for dominance where two teams of 5 to 32 players attempt to destroy each other. It will take more than guns to finish the job. Assume your position as a fighter, armed with swords, guns, and magic; or take the field as a support character that builds, heals, and resurrects fallen comrades. Feel like bringing out the big stick? Become a siege unit like the Behemoth (a huge animal biped descendant of elephants that takes down buildings using an uprooted tree) or the battering ram to destroy enemy buildings. Always thought you were a natural born leader? Take control as the leader of the action, the commander, who builds, researches, expands, and tactically strategizes your team's efforts.
Canonically it takes place at the advent of and during the "Third Tiberium War", after the Brotherhood of Nod launches an unexpected and worldwide offensive against the Global Defense Initiative, abruptly ending a period of seventeen years of silence and crippling GDI forces everywhere. With the odds tipped in Nod's favor this time, GDI field commanders rally their troops and begin to combat the Brotherhood's second re-emergence, trying to restore lost hope. The game also features the introduction of a new third faction (Scrin) to the Tiberian series of the Command & Conquer games, and is the second C&C title in which players are able to upgrade their forces.
The very mention of this game sends shivers down the spine of any gamer born before 1995. The game that (while not inventing the genre) almost singlehandedly brought the RTS genre into the minds and harddrives of the general gaming public.

In the game, you play as a lowly general fighting for either the (supposedly) good Global Defense Initiative, or the semi-terrorist Brotherhood of NOD. Both struggling to unlock and control the secrets of the mysterious new lifeform "Tiberium". Eventually, as the plot thickens, you will learn just how the Tiberium future really is.

In the game, the player controls a club of kids in a common neighborhood setting. The player tries to convince all of the other kids in the neighborhood to join his/her club. The player can do this in three main ways: treefort building, military might, and economic power. If the player chooses to focus on treefort building, he/she tries to build a huge treefort that stretches to the tops of the trees. This treefort must have the coolest stuff in the whole neighborhood. Only then will the other kids in the neighborhood take notice and want to join. If the player focuses on military might, he/she wants to engage in epic water battles with the other clubs to soak them head to toe with water. This will surely convince the other clubs that the player's club is the greatest ever. Lastly, if the player wants to spend time gaining economic power, he/she will want to build the biggest economic empire in the whole neighborhood. The player will set up lemonade stands, run paper routes, and sell treats to everyone in the neighborhood, gaining more money than any kid could ever get even after a lifetime's worth of allowance. The other kids won't be able to resist.

The player's ultimate goal is to eventually convince all of the kids in the whole town to join his/her club. To do this, the player must go through every neighborhood in the town, convincing the kids one neighborhood at a time. By the time the player convinces all of the kids in the town to join his/her club, the player will have enormous treeforts, complete with zip lines, water turrets, clubhouses, and more. He/she will know what it takes to plan out a raid on a two-level treefort with only three kids and their water balloons. The player will also understand how to manage lemonade stands to get the most Moms and Dads to buy lemonade and how to make sure all of the parents get their newspaper, even though the only cool section in there is the Funnies.

Dune II: Battle for Arrakis

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/Dune2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

"Dune II: Battle for Arrakis" is a real-time strategy game based upon the 1984 movie set in Frank Herbert's popular sci-fi universe. Released in 1992, Dune II proved to be successful with gamers and critics alike due to its addictive playability and innovative game design - the gameplay has been emulated many times since. Dune II led the huge upsurge in popularity the genre has enjoyed right up until this day and is considered to be the Godfather of real-time strategy games.

The plot consists of three waring parties named House Atreides, House Harkonnen and House Ordos. All are vying for control of the most important planet in the known universe - Arrakis, better known as Dune. The planet Arrakis contains the only known source of the valuable and essential spice called Melange. Melange is the primary resource collected in-game and it funds the war effort of each house - the more spice one possesses, the more successful one becomes.

The game is played from a top-down perspective and can be controlled entirely by mouse. The aim is to build an army of a big enough size to seize land, eliminate any opposing threat and ultimately expand your dynasty. Each map contains spice deposits that need to be collected via harvesters. The spice is then transported to a refinery and tuned into credits, which can then be spent on the expansion of base and the construction of more units. As the game progresses more technologically advanced units and structures become available, changing the dynamics of the battlefield.

The game was re-made twice by Westwood though only the original was ported to the Sega Mega Drive, Amiga, Archimedes and Risc PC range of RISC OS computers.

Darwinia

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/darwinia/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

The world of Darwinia is a virtual themepark, running entirely inside a computer network and populated by a sentient evolving life form called the Darwinians.
The game isn't a direct entry on the series, but rather a spin off based on the cold war between US and Russia coupled with a sci fi twist.

The game introduces funny characters that make a lot of funny moments while you're playing it. You'll meet megalomaniac Yuri, the heroic Tanya, the goofy Romanov and the very standard president of the United States, along with a very funny set of other characters.

The game is standard RTS gameplay on steroids(for its time anyway), it's fast paced, and although the strategy involves often more brute force than the strategy part, the action and the range of things you can do more than make up for it.

You can start by selecting your outfit, the allies or the soviets, who in this game are a super power taking over the world thanks to psychological technology developer by Yuri.

Depending on the side you take, you'll have a select army very balanced against your enemy, with the Russians being strong with units like specialized tanks, soldiers and general ground forces whereas the allies have strong air forces and other bonuses.

The game has a high and addictive fun factor, which means that if you're in college or have to work early in the morning it's not recommendable to set your hands in this game as you'll easily see yourself playing up to 8 hours of it. It's simply that good, so if you happen to not have played it and you have a copy nearby, fret not and pick it up. It'll make your time worth it.

Rome: Total War

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/rometotalwar/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Rome: Total War is the third game in the popular Total War series. The player begins by choosing to play one of three Roman factions: the Brutii, the Julii and the Scipii. The player must manage each city under the faction's control, build armies, assign faction members to positions of mayor or general, and expand the faction's territory by defeating enemy factions such as Gaul, Greece, Macedonia, and many more. Meanwhile, the other Senate issues special missions for the player to complete and gain favor. Senate offices may be assigned to faction members. As the game progresses, each faction member's political and military influence can grow or shrink. If the faction leader dies, he is replaced by an heir. It is up to the player to choose who is in line for that role. Once the game reaches a certain point, it changes up and the player must fight the other Roman factions for control of Rome.

When combat takes place, the game moves from the strategic, turn-based map view to a full 3D real-time tactical view. The player has several units under his command, usually comprised of 50 or more individual soldiers. Each unit (not each soldier) can be maneuvered individually or all units as a massive formation. Siege equipment can be built to capture cities, the citizens of which can be left as they are, enslaved, or slaughtered at the player's discretion. Mercenaries can be recruited to fill in weaknesses in a particular army, but their loyalty is not at all assured and they, like the cheap peasant units, may prove unreliable and in fierce combat -- units with low morale may break and flee the field. When an army engages the enemy, if another friendly army (of the player's own or that of an ally) is within range, they will rush to reinforce the battle.

The combination of turn-based and realtime strategy is quite enjoyable. The scope of the game makes for some long and often intense playing sessions. Plus, when a player beats a particular faction other than the three starting Roman factions, it then becomes playable. So there is a great deal of replayability as well.

Battleships Forever

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/battleshipsforever/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

 Introduction
Battleships Forever is a freeware tactical Real Time Strategy game that puts you in command of a small fleet of warships in space. Combat and damage mechanics are extremely detailed. Everything is simulated in game if possible. There are no abitrary "to hit chance" values in Battleships Forever. The game also features many innovative mechanics that you've never seen before. For example, the Cronus Battleship sports a Flux Shield generator that allows you to draw a defensive force shield around your ships in any shape you want. Another example are the Deflector modules that are used extensively through the game. These modules make a single section of a ship totally invulnerable to fire. This means that you will have to manoeuvre your ships to attack sections of the enemy ships not protected by Deflectors while keeping your own protected sections facing the enemy. Position is paramount!

Players will command picked fleets made up of Battleships, Destroyers and Patrol Craft. The completed game will include ten campaign missions and multiple skirmish modes.

The sequel to Herzog(MSX), Herzog Zwei has the player flying around in a command plane using free-movement controls a la Thunderforce 2(also by Technosoft). This plane can attack the enemy command plane, or it can switch into a ground form for attacking ground units.

The RTS elements are the true purpose of the command plane, or c-ship. The c-ship can pick up units and give them programs such as "Attack Nearest Base", "Defend Nearest Base", and so on. It can then drop the unit near its objective, pick up another one, program it, and so on. This is probably a function of the Genesis's limited input mechanisms for unit selection and menu actions, but it results in a very nice approach that balances highly complex instructions against a large amount of time required to command each unit.

Herzog Zwei is a two-player game, with various bases scattered throughout the map and a Main Base in either corner. More bases allow the player to build units more quickly, and once one player takes the other's Main Base, the game is over. If one player destroys the other's c-ship, it respawns at the victim's Main Base in a few seconds.

Prepare your pre-emptive strike before one of your supposed allies gets the same idea. Choose the perfect moment for betrayal, obliterating your opponents with an apocalyptic thermonuclear barrage, but get it wrong and their devastating counter attack will bring you to your knees!
It's Global Thermonuclear War, and nobody wins. This sequel boasts an entirely new engine producing refined gameplay and improved graphics (although the game is now a few years old). Set in a medieval world the gameplay involves resource management and strategic combat. You take the role of a local ruler who attempts to build up his power base until he gains control of the entire land. In order to do this, you'll have to keep you subjects happy or they'll move elsewhere. You control many areas of your fiefdom including rationing, agriculture, trade, weapons production, building and the development of your army. During combat you can allow the computer to automatically work out the results. The game has a lot of depth and a tutorial is incorporated to help you. Good cutscenes intersperse the action. Alongside the single-player game, is a multi-player mode over LAN, Net or modem/serial connection.

Moonbase Commander

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/moonbasecommander/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Moonbase Commander is a turn-based strategy game where players compete to spread a web-like base across a lunar battlefield while annihilating their opponents. Players can select from four factions each of which has a unique look for it's units and a specifically voiced adviser (although all four have identical capabilities) and compete alone or in teams against other humans (locally or via the net) or the assorted Bots that are included. Competition takes place on a variety of terrain, sometimes barren and empty sometimes green and full of rivers.

Once a battle is started, players take turns using a limited supply of energy to launch weapons against their enemies or launch new buildings to expand their base. Both are done with a simple aim and force interface similar to Worms or most early golf games so it takes some skill to land a building exactly where you want it. Because buildings are connected to your main hub with a web of power lines, careful planning is required to avoid leaving important nodes unprotected. There are 18 different weapons and buildings each with an energy cost based on how powerful and useful it is. Ultimately, you must destroy an enemy's main hub unit to eliminate him from the battle.

Moonbase Commander has a minutes to learn, lifetime to master quality. There's never enough energy to do everything you want to and your opposition is always breathing down your neck. Should you risk a tricky shot to place an expensive shield generator by your hub or just settle for launching waves of cheap cluster bombs at those enemy anti-air batteries in hopes of overwhelming them. Maybe you should just bide your time and send up a few more observation balloons. The possibilities are surprisingly limitless in this simple yet complex game.
The second of the series, Freedom Force vs. the Third Reich is a superhero tactical-rpg/strategy game with an extensive character customisation system. As in the original Freedom Force game, the interface is intuitive and easy to use, the storyline is lighthearted and humorous, and there are excellent character development tools.

Missions are framed within stylish cutscenes that are highly reminiscent of the golden age of comics. Nearly all of the action and movement in the game can be controlled by mouse, but shortcut keys are also functional. Gameplay is in real time by default, but with a turn based aspect, as with a tap of the spacebar you can pause the game and issue orders.
Warcraft has not only become a classic, winning many awards, but it has set new standards for multiplayer games. Set in the mythic kingdom of Azeroth, players are given the task of maintaining a thriving economy while building a war machine with which to destroy the enemy.

By playing either the Humans or the Orcs in this saga, two separate story lines evolve with 12 scenarios per side telling the tale of the battle for Azeroth. From swords to sorcery, all the elements of classic fantasy are here to explore: rich forests, dark dungeons and bubbling swamps await the stalwart troops amassed to fight for dominance. Command many unique armies and creatures including Knights, Archers, Clerics, Warlocks, Daemons, Elementals, and the Dead.

The multiplayer aspects of the game bring Warcraft to a new level of excitement.Challenge another player on over 20 custom maps and determine who among you is the supreme warlord. Head to head play is supported over modem, serial link, and IPX networks, and works cross-platform with both the IBM-PC and Macintosh versions.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/giants/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Everything about this game is strange.

Your character choices are: a jetpack-loving British-ish alien, a semi-mermaid sorceress/archer, or an incredibly huge roaring monster that eats everything. All of them are a lot of fun and you play as each during the game's campaign.

Gameplay is usually third-person shooting, but there's also resource collection, base-building, and even some vehicle races.

The most unusual thing about Giants is that it tries to be funny - and is funny! Don't skip the cut-scenes on this one.

Multiplayer supports large games with different modes. The most common is base vs base where each team tries to collect the most resources (brainy smarties) and destroy the enemy teams's base before it can be rebuilt. Resources are spent on buildings for weapon upgrades, base defense, and vehicle production. One player can be the giant Kabuto who's almost impossible to take down.

Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/aoe2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings is a real-time strategy computer game set in the Middle Ages. It was released in 1999, and it is the second game of the Age of Empires series developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft.

In the original Age of Kings, the player can choose from 13 civilizations. Each has a distinct personality, with particular strengths and weaknesses patterned on the real civilizations. Each civilization also has some unique units (ships and warriors) with more-or-less historically accurate names.
