Released on 2005-10-31 (Halloween), the game is integrated with their previous release, City of Heroes. The gameplay centers on defeating a variety of computer controlled opponents within a three-dimensional world using various powers and attacks, sometimes with the help of several other players.

As City of Villains is an expansion to City of Heroes as well as its own standalone title, it features several changes that are unique to its players, unless they also have a copy of the original game. One of the primary changes to the game was the ability to play as a supervillain, with new Archetypes (classes) and powers unique to Villains. Other changes to the game include:
These portals were used by royalty, travelers, merchants, peasants... anyone that had need to travel from one world to another could use them.

Whomever, whatever, however they were created was lost through the ages. Everyone believed that since the portals had existed since the beginning of time then they would last until the end of time. But then things changed.

Nobody knows exactly what happened. The disappearance of the portals are as much a mystery as their origins. The portals didn't all disappear at once. No, as my great-great grandfather tells it, it took about a year until the last known portal from this world to another was gone. The year was called the Year of Chaos.
Long ago, before the thinking races had tamed the horse or built the first cities, the rune-guardians of Ashen Empires mastered the magic of the runes, learned to control animals and plants and perhaps even weather... and then vanished.

Centuries later, the peace they had fashioned still endured. Food was plentiful, customs were calm, and people had no ancient hatreds to blind them. The thinking races — humans, night elves, orcs, and other folk — did not wage war upon one another. Wise rule, hard work, and brisk trade ensured prosperity. Knowledge was shared, dangerous beasts kept outside the frontiers, and all the land was a single nation.

It was a golden age...

But golden ages do not last forever.

The Time of Darkness
No one knows where they came from, the dark warriors. Suddenly they were everywhere, speaking languages not known to the people of Ashen Empires, seizing knowledge of the runes wherever they could find it. They used the runes to create items of terror — weapons, armor, implements of torture, objects that wrenched mind and soul. These runic devices corrupted the spirits of all who used them.

As the armies of Rune Warriors grew, so grew the resolve of the people of Ashen Empires to destroy them. The desire for peace, even the very concept of peace, was abandoned.

Lotor, a nobleman of Krythan — and later king of that region (once Ashen Empires was sundered into warring nations) — was the first great defender against the Rune Warriors. He built armies of his own, made peace among nations that had been founded upon strife, outmaneuvered his enemies, and gave hope to a world that had all but lost it.

And even though the war grew long and Lotor grew old, he found a warrior to succeed him as the hope of Ashen Empires. Talazar, the Sword of Krythan, a noble fighter no Rune Warrior could stand against, led Lotor’s armies to victory again and again.

He was a hero for all the world.

But such heroes do not last forever.

The Time of Ash
In time, the armies of Krythan defeated the Rune Warriors and assembled all their runic artifacts. King Lotor summoned his twelve greatest warriors, Talazar among them, and commanded them to take the artifacts far away — to hide them where the eyes of the thinking races would never find them. The twelve accepted their duty and rode from the capital with these items of evil.

But none ever reached his intended destination.

Each warrior — some after mere days of travel, some after months — succumbed to the corrupting influence of the rune artifacts. One by one their thoughts turned to personal gain, power, lust, revenge. One by one they abandoned paths of humility and self-sacrifice to prey upon the people of Ashen Empires.

Some became bandit-kings, leading armies of raiders into more civilized lands. Some became solitary riders, thundering through the night on missions sane folk would never understand, their names invoked only in whispers, only to frighten children. Some died, only to have their heirs accept their rune artifacts and continue their legacies of pain.

Some disappeared. This was the fate of Talazar, once the greatest of heroes. Those who saw him in the time before his disappearance say he was no longer a man, no longer quite human.

Centuries passed, centuries in which the land did not heal, the nations did not reunite, knowledge did not prosper. Beasts crept into once-civilized lands. Kings fought kings even when the rune artifacts had no part to play in their squabbles.

This was a time of slow, inescapable suffering.

But even times such as this do not last forever.

The Time of Renewal
In recent years, prophecies have hinted that a new era was dawning, a time of change and instability, a time when the ugly balance of the Time of Ash could be lost... for better or for worse.

Sixteen summers ago, in the nation of Krythan, a boy-child of Lotor’s line was born and given the name Lotor. He survived to reach his age of majority and this summer not long ago received the crown of Krythan, taking the royal name of Lotor II.

Not long after, military forces claiming to belong to Talazar began laying waste to towns and cities in the western regions. They claimed not to follow some descendant of the original Talazar, but the corrupted warrior himself, and tales filtering from those distant places say that he is now a demon, a thing of inhuman places and unknowable intent.

Heroes, men and women skilled in fighting, have become more numerous in recent summers, some flocking to the side of Lotor II, some joining the forces of Talazar, others seeking their own way in this increasingly turbulent land.

And you are one of them.

Your skills and courage are enough to make you the master of any little village, the champion of any petty nobleman... but that is not enough. The challenge this new era poses calls to you. You can tip the balance of power — toward Lotor, toward Talazar, toward some fate no one can predict.

This chance waits before you, but you must act soon.

Granado Espada

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/granadoespada/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Granado Espada, also known as Sword of the New World, is an Age of Exploration fantasy MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) developed by IMC Entertainment. Gameplay features classic RPG elements reminiscent of Dungeons & Dragons, such as killing monsters and completing quests for loot and experience points, levels, character attributes (charisma, strength, wisdom, etc.), and alignments (neutral, chaotic or lawful). Lineage's stat, monster, and item system was originally largely borrowed from NetHack with MMO elements added, but recent updates have introduced more original content. Player versus player combat (also known as PVP) is extensive in Lineage.

Thousands of years ago a species that would later call
themselves "Lutians" rose from the center point of Yue,
known as "Vita Genero." These strange creatues had an ability
forsaken to all other creatures; conscious thought. The Lutians
view the Yue as a source of power and use it for many purposes
including magic.

Many Lutians believe that they were chosen by the Yue,
others believe that they, like other living things were the
result of random creations by it . This led to many
wars and still divides many lutians today.

Over the last hundred years some very strange things
have emerged very close to Vita Genero, where the first
Lutians emerged. These creatures came to be known as the
Nosaeron. They have caused many kingdoms to fall around vita genero,
and seem to have no purpose other than to destroy all life.

Now two kingdoms, Patrian and Ipcus, are fighting over the
nature of these creatures, The king of Patrian believes that
these creatures have somehow disrupted the Yue to use their power
to rule the world, and the king of Ipcus believes that the Nosaerons were
created by the Yue to get rid of the Lutians. The one and only thing the
two kings can agree on is that they must find the true nature of these creatures
and stop them at all costs. Both kings have ordered a call to arms of all their citizens
to discover the true nature of the Nosaerons, and seal them away forever.

General Notes

Illutia is a 2d anime mmorpg began under the original name
"Aspereta" In April of 2003. It was released mostly just as a test
run to see if there was still a market for 2d mmorpgs. Aspereta
became more popular than the small team ever imagined with over
50,000 accounts in less than a year. This encouraged Crazed Monkeys
to push hard to meet the expectations of their fans.

Now as of June 2005 Illutia (formerly Aspereta) is finally ready for
beta. We hope you enjoy this new version of the game as it is capable
of much more than we could have dreamed of for Aspereta.
It is currently in Open Beta. Like most 3D MMORPGs, it is a point and click game, where players can attack monsters, pick up items, and talk to NPCs.

The game contains two nations which a player can choose to join, Holy Empire and Religious Alliance; four classes, Knight, Spearman, Archer and Sorcerer. To become a stronger character, the player must kill monsters for EXP (experience points) to level up. As a player advances in levels, it is possible to pick fights, not only with monsters, but with players of either country.

Players can form guilds which allow for more social interaction, other people to quest with, and the addition of a cape and guild tag. They can also engage in guild wars, involving two guilds fighting each other. Upon reaching level 40, players can take part in scheduled territorial wars, and fight against members of the opposing nation.
Ares, Greek god of war, has become resentful of his fellow gods, and wishes to gain more power in order to defeat them. However, the Greek city-states are already warring, and Ares must find new lands in which war can be started. At the same time, the land of Arabic is at a restless peace, with the leaders of both The Holy Empire, and The Religious Alliance ready to break it. Ares travels to Arabic, appearing to Emperor Damion of The Holy Empire as a crow, and incites him to attack the Alliance. Athena, Ares' sister, gains knowledge of this plan, and also travels to Arabic, and informs the native god Kulam of the foreign gods intrusion. Under her guidance, Kulam convinces Aleria, the daughter of Alliance leader Abner, to retrieve an artifact that could confine Ares and prevent him from completing his plan.

DO Online

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/doonline/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

 The beginning…
At the end of 19th century at a Chinese antique store in ChinaTown, San Francisco, a boy was playing an old casket named ‘Karma’ and as he opened the door to the ancient Chinese style house inside the box, he falls into ‘Karma’. As he wakes up, he finds himself in a Chinese house inside the box and he opens the door to the outside to find out that the ancient Chinese continent is in front of his eyes.

Before the history of China even began, there were enormous forces that conquered the entire continent, called Lawful, Chaotic, and Evil Faction by people.

Nobody knows how it started, but they were fighting each other until only one group remained, and this war is the ‘Thousand Year War of the Continent’. Nobody could predict for sure who would become the last standing group.

However, a small incident happens at the Five Mountain Range located on the edge of Middle Earth that puts the end to this war. Lawful Faction, once with powerful influence over the whole continent, starts to crumble under the effect of Chaotic Faction’s occult artifact, named ‘The Ark of Heaven’, and Chaotic Faction who secretly applauded the befall of Jung Faction grabs hands with Lawful Faction, as they find themselves in uncertain position with their weapons lowered once pointed at the other.

The overlords of Lawful and Chaotic Faction immediately deploys carefully selected 8 promising next-generation martial artists in order to seal the ‘the Ark of Heaven’ at the Sun Temple which is one of 4 primary bases of Evil Faction.

There was a Follower of Tao who was leading this party of 8 to the Five Mountain Range, who was known as Tutor of Five Elements. As they were in the process of sealing after getting rid of the combat masters of Evil Faction who were protecting the ‘The Ark of Heaven’ at the Sun Temple, they get themselves drawn inside of the “The Ark of Heavenâ€

Forgotten Legends

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/forgottenlegends/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Forgotten Legends is a new MMORPG using the Multiverse engine.

There are a vast number of design features in Forgotten Legends that make our game different to others. The main difference is the way players level and the way the combat system works. Players will be able to attain higher levels of skill and power without the grind that occurs in the majority of other MMOS. The combat system is very strategic with huge amounts of customisation for players who like the freedom to design the way their characters fight.

On top of this, we have based the game on 2 other concepts, freedom and variety. Players have more freedom that other games - whether it be being able to completely change your battle style, what faction you fight for, or where you go. When it comes to variety Forgotten Legends offers players more than they could imagine with numerous viable ways for players to advance in the game.

Crepuscule

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/crepuscule/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Crepuscule is a MMORPG game, based on a modified Ultima Online client with nearly completely rewritten server.

"For Wurm Online (henceforth called Wurm) to be something special and not just another 3D fantasy massively multiplayer game, we realized that we had to actually implement the features that players have demanded since the dawn of these types of games. Other 3D games have promised these features and still have them on their 'upcoming features' list unless they dropped them when they realized they'd never make it. Why? Because Wurm is built on technology that can make it happen and other games are not.

The first technological advantage of Wurm: it is done in Java. This means that we can reach gamers on operating systems that usually have few if any of these types of games to play. We also consider Wurm to be the first 3D java game that actually looks better graphically than most PC games while still being playable.

The second advantage: Wurm is tile-based. This means first and foremost three things:

We have more manageable data structures

We may stream terrain

Line of sight in the client may be outrageous

Now, none of these possibilities are easy to implement but we have succeeded. This is the glory of Wurm and the foundation that the game rests upon.

An example of the technological advantage:
Because we have such manageable data structures, we may have millions of individual trees on one map.
For example, streaming the terrain gives us the opportunity compared to other games:

trees and plants grow

you can cut down trees

and you can plant trees

Other effects are for instance:

you can terraform by digging and dropping dirt.

you can pave roads

grass and other types of vegetation compete to be predominant

you can dig out caves in the mountains

* some terrain can be converted to farmland where you grow crops of various kinds"

A Tale in the Desert 3

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/atitd/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Ancient Egypt was a land steeped in history, achievements and wonder; a feral continent capable of turning bleak as quickly as bountiful, fallen as suddenly as fertile. Yet through it all, its robust people have woven a rich tapestry and, with the aid of a staunch belief in their almighty, overseeing gods and pharaoh, they constructed a civilization unlike any other in all antiquity. Relive a time when greatness was born not of weapons and armor, but of productivity and solidarity. Do you have what it takes to rise above the hardships you will face?

Its setting of historically real Ancient Egypt is not the only aspect which makes A Tale in the Desert III unique among MMOGs. Hero Online is free to play with cash shop items available, much like Legend of Ares, another MMORPG created by Netgame, or RuneScape, created by Jagex, and many other MMORPG's. The player, when creating a character, is not only able to choose the gender of his/her character, but what kind of weapons their character will be using. These weapon proficiencies may or may not affect the job class people will choose when they reach a certain level for job change. Each of the four characters specializes in his or her own weaponry. For example "The Ruthless Blade" is currently the only character in the game with the ability to wield a bow.

As of July 31st 2006, Hero Online had its official release and is no longer in beta.

Tearsol

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/tearsol/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

In Tearsol Online, the player takes on the classic role of a lone protagonist, adventuring for wealth and fame while uncovering an ancient conspiracy of church and state.
The original title enjoyed great popularity, with speculation (uncomfirmed by Microsoft) that subscription reached as high as 120,000 players at it's peak. Asheron's Call 2 did not meet the expectations of the publishers, having launched in November of 2002 with "Asheron's Call 2: Fallen Kings" and continuing on with the "Legions" content expansion until the plug was pulled on December 30, 2005.

The original game still lives beyond it's sequel, now having been returned to the control of the developer Turbine Entertainment Software, and has moved on to it's second expansion "Asheron's Call: Thrones of Destiny", currently the latest content available.

As for Asheron's Call 2, although players were chiefly approving of the content, gameplay dynamics and greatly enhanced graphics, the original Asheron's Call player base was somewhat divided, and at release the game suffered initial problems of server instability, engine bugs, balance and combat flaws, and critical chat system problems. Also of note are the high system requirements, challenging to many gamers of the time, and perhaps even moreso to the rpg community in particular.

Although Turbine and Microsoft proved capable and commited to addressing the many release issues, the game never overcame the poor launch. Although the publishers have not disclosed the numbers, it is estimated that Asheron's Call 2 peaked briefly at about 50,000 players, and was closer to 10,000 at the time that is was cancelled.
