The main game brought in Knuckles as a main, playable character with his own unique set of moves, while keeping Sonic fresh on his adventure to beat Dr. Robotnik.

For Sonic, the game play was still the same as his previous games where speed was his biggest element as he would blaze through the levels in no time. Tails was still his trusty sidekick though and able to give him a lift every now and then. It was even easier if you could get a 2nd player to take control of the two-tailed fox. Knuckles was fast, but his advantage was in his ability to glide across the stage, latch onto walls, and bust through rocks that Sonic cannot.

The cartridge could connect with cartidges of the previous 2 Sonic games, and allowed for special features never unlockable before. Having Sonic 2 or 3 attached would allow you to play through the entire game as Knuckles, which was never an option before. Doing so allowed you to explore the game worlds in a way Sonic never could, and made those titles instantly replayable by getting to take control of Knuckles.

Not only Knuckles, but even Tails got a great new chance to shine. Though he wasn't a main playable character in the main game, when attached to Sonic 3 you could take control of just him and soar through the levels as long as his tails could carry him.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/Sonic3/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

The storyline picks up shortly after the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Dr. Robotnik's[1] space station, the Death Egg, has fallen out of orbit after his mech suit exploded in his final showdown with Sonic, causing critical damage to the ship.

However, instead of impacting the planet, the Death Egg crash-landed on Angel Island[2][3], a mystical floating landmass previously believed to exist only in legend. As Dr. Robotnik repairs the ship he meets up with the Island’s sole inhabitant, Knuckles the Echidna. Knuckles is the last surviving member of an ancient civilization, whose ruins and relics are scattered throughout the island. He is also the guardian of a set of Chaos Emeralds, which are the source of the island’s levitation powers.

Knowing Sonic and Tails will try to track him down, and realizing he can use the Chaos Emeralds to power the ship, Robotnik deceives Knuckles into believing Sonic is trying to steal his emeralds, and he’s come to help him. The ports have all of the music emulated in MIDI format.

Some music, Carnival Night Zone, Ice Cap Zone, Launch Base Zone, the Knuckles Theme of Sonic 3 and the Sonic 3 credits music, were replaced with original music. One possible explanation for this is that those pieces of music used both MIDI and Wave output, and some sound cards of the time were not capable of doing so. Another explanation for the replacement is that the songs were replaced due to legal reasons, because connections could be made between similar songs by Michael Jackson. [1] Other than that, the gameplay is identical to their Genesis counterparts.

Sonic Robo Blast 2

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/srb2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

A fun, light-hearted robot smashing romp in the style of the first Sonic the Hedgehog game. Using the Doom engine, this game is a great game keeping the true feel of the classic Sonic the Hedgehog games, while moving into three dimensions. Its gameplay includes most of the gameplay modes of Doom (with ring-throwing in match mode), and co-op play with Sonic and friends.

Sonic R

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/SonicR/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Sonic R (ソニック R) is a racing game developed by Traveller's Tales and Sonic Team for the Sega Saturn and PC, the latter version being ported to the GameCube and PlayStation 2 in Sonic Gems Collection. It features characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. The game is characterized by the same sense of environmental openness in the Sonic platformers. It contains colorful 3D graphics combined with a strong soundtrack by Richard Jacques (including songs performed by British singer T. J. Davis). Running the game on XP successfully depends very much on the hardware of the PC it is being run on. It plays just like the old Mario and Sonic games. The action is fun, the sound and graphics are great and the storyline is funny and well done. Glace is a great game for all ages. A PC version was also released in Europe. This edition includes the addition of six Game Gear games, the two games that were included in the Japanese version only (The Ooze and Comix Zone), new artwork and movies, a new in-game menu, and a mid-game saving feature. It is, however, missing six Sonic Game Gear games that were included (along with the six included in this collection) in Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut. It is the first Sonic game with a 12+ PEGI rating.

Sonic Adventure DX

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/SonixDX/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

This game was released as an enhanced port of the original Sonic Adventure for the Sega Dreamcast (1999), with several additional features. The PC version was released at first in only Japan and Europe, but was eventually released in the US later on in a limited amount. Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut included a mission mode, which included 60 missions to complete throughout the adventure fields and action stages. Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut also includes a mini game collection, which is comprised of 12 Sega Game Gear games featuring Sonic and friends. It didn't do quite as well with reviews as its Sega Dreamcast predecessor.

Sonic Riders

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/SonicRiders/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Sonic Riders is a racing game developed by Sonic Team's UGA Division (a second-party developer for SEGA) for the video game consoles Nintendo Gamecube, Sony PlayStation 2, Microsoft Xbox and PC DVD-ROM. It is the fourth racing game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, preceded by Sonic Drift, Sonic Drift 2 and Sonic R. This time, the characters race on floating airboards, air shoes and motorbikes powered by air, the Extreme Gear.
Sonic Riders was revealed by Famitsu on September 7, 2005 prior to 2005's Tokyo Game Show.

The game was released to start off the 15th anniversary of the release of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. This game introduces five new playable characters, the Babylon Rogues and the E-10000 series.
On August 22, 2006, a PC port of Sonic Riders was announced. The port was released in November according to both Sega of America's and Sega Europe's websites. A North American price of $19.99 is listed on Sega's Press Release. [1]. In Europe it was released at a price of 29.99€. A player will choose one of four teams to use. The four teams all have their own strengths and weaknesses as do each of the individual characters. Sonic Heroes was the first Sonic game to introduce the "Speed, Flight, and Power" concept into the series.

A team is made up of three characters, each suited for a specific task. The three types of characters are "flight," "speed," and "power." The flight type is able to ascend short distances with other party members. The speed character has the ability to move at a faster rate than the other two members of the team. Lastly, the power character is the strongest physically of the three.

Sonic the Hedgehog(2006)

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/Sonic2k6/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

The story of Sonic begins in Soleanna, the City of Water. Soleanna is ruled by Princess Elise, who is the keeper of a dark secret, the "Flames of Disaster", which involves the Chaos Emeralds. Dr. Eggman learns of the "Flames of Disaster" and attempts to kidnap the Princess when Sonic appears and destroys Eggman's robots, escaping with Elise. Soon afterwards, Elise is successfully captured by Eggman, but not before she gives Sonic the blue Chaos Emerald she had, after which point, Sonic joins with Tails to save Elise. Sonic and Tails are able to rescue Elise, but they are pursued by Eggman's robots. Tails is able to divert the robots, allowing Sonic and Elise escape. Running to a field, Elise thanks Sonic for saving her, but she notices that he is hurt, and she uses a strap of her dress to bandage his wound. Elise explains to Sonic more about Solaris and the Flames of Disaster. When Elise shows signs of apprehension, Sonic tells Elise to smile and they return to the city. However, upon entering the city, Sonic is soon attacked by a strange white hedgehog called Silver the Hedgehog, who has traveled from the future to stop the "Iblis Trigger"[4] during his journey; Iblis causes many deaths in the future from which Silver hails.[5] Sonic and Silver engage in combat, but Elise is captured again by Eggman.
