It is inspired by Avalon Hill' board game of the same name.

The game begins in 4000 BC, where the player gets a small tribe which have to be controlled and made great through the ages until modern and near-future times. The game is also known simply as Civilization, or abbreviated to Civ or Civ I.

Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/moo2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Master of Orion II is like Civilization. Rather than take over the world, you focus on the galaxy, taking worlds instead of cities. Pick or create your own race, pursue technologies, employ strategic fleet deployments, and engage in extremely advanced diplomacy.
This organization pushed scientific progress and planetary colonization forward until the human race covered almost the entire galaxy. Ironically, it was the Core's final triumph against mortality that would prove to be its undoing, for when the Core mandated uploading all peoples' brain patterns into machines in a method known as "patterning," there was a massive rebellion from the Arm (named after their location, an arm of the spiral galaxy), an organization which banded together from the edges of the galaxy and demanded to keep their physical bodies. A war like no other began, which has since raged on for four thousand years. The Core copy their finest warriors' brains into fighting robots, and the Arm respond with cloning and powerful manned units.

The Settlers II

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/thesettlers2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

This is the second game in the popular Settlers series. Warcraft has not only become a classic, winning many awards, but it has set new standards for multiplayer games. Set in the mythic kingdom of Azeroth, players are given the task of maintaining a thriving economy while building a war machine with which to destroy the enemy.

By playing either the Humans or the Orcs in this saga, two separate story lines evolve with 12 scenarios per side telling the tale of the battle for Azeroth. From swords to sorcery, all the elements of classic fantasy are here to explore: rich forests, dark dungeons and bubbling swamps await the stalwart troops amassed to fight for dominance. Command many unique armies and creatures including Knights, Archers, Clerics, Warlocks, Daemons, Elementals, and the Dead.

The multiplayer aspects of the game bring Warcraft to a new level of excitement.Challenge another player on over 20 custom maps and determine who among you is the supreme warlord. Head to head play is supported over modem, serial link, and IPX networks, and works cross-platform with both the IBM-PC and Macintosh versions.

Black & White

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/blackwhite/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

A boy and his parents are strolling along the beach of a little paradise-like island. A dark voice speaks to you: "A land of innocence, has no need for Gods... until fate intervenes." The boy suddenly runs to the water. His parents start shouting that he should stay away from the water, but the boy is already swimming in the sea and sharks are going to eat him! Then the two desperate parents take action: they start praying to the gods. A dark voice suddenly takes over and the view zooms out, the whole island is now visible. The dark voice says: "When people pray a God is always born. Able to change eternity, that God is you. Are you a blessing, or a curse? Good, or evil? Be what you will, you are destiny."

Then this wonderful innovative game starts. You are a god and can do almost everything that a god can do. You can build up cities, kill hundreds and thousands of people, perform miracles and destroy the other gods. The ultimate goal is to be the only god and defeat your rival Nemesis. An important element in this game is that you can be an evil or good god.

The innovative aspect of the game is the great amount of freedom that you have and the fact that you can't die, after all you are a god!
