Players can either run, sneak, or kill their way past the castle guards.  Shooting was de-emphasized considerably from other games of its time and techniques such as stealing guard uniforms or pursuading guards to surrender at gun point were brought to the forefront.  <br />

It is widely considered to be the first game in the stealth genre and it inspired countless other games both in the genre and as extensions of the story.  The developers at id software used this game as inspiration for Wolfenstein3D which was itself a genre defining title.
