Solid Snake, everyone's favorite mullet-sporting supersoldier, is back, along with many other familiar faces and voices. While its predecessor was lauded for telling a complex story, this sequel has even more fascinating twists and turns. Also, like Metal Gear Solid, MGS2 takes console-game storytelling to an entirely new level with stunning in-game movies, great graphics, and game mechanics that let you find your own solutions to challenges. The game's twisting and at times bizarre plot will undoubtedly keep some gamers perplexed.

Konami has replaced the moronic enemies from the first MGS with more cerebral and capable foes; this causes an even greater emphasis on stealth than the original. The controls have been refined and Snake's repertoire of moves has grown, significantly deepening the gameplay. This is, technically and stylistically, one of the best-looking PS2 games on the market. The sound is also topnotch, with a fabulous score and outstanding voice acting. What makes this game such a standout, however, is how all of these sight, sound, and story elements combine to immerse the player into an entertainment form somewhere between movie and game. It will be years before Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is surpassed. This is interactive entertainment at its finest. --Raymond M. A part of the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series, it is preceded by Grand Theft Auto 2 (GTA2) and succeeded by Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (Vice City). GTA III is also the first in the series to be released on the PlayStation 2.

The game centers on a nameless criminal who was betrayed by his girlfriend in a bank heist, and is required to work his way up the crime ladder of the city, before confronting her and eventually taking his revenge. Like its predecessors, GTA III implements sandbox-like gameplay, where the player is given the freedom to perform various activities in a large city, such as completing missions, exploring the city, committing criminal acts, or completing side missions.

The game concept and gameplay, coupled with the use of a three dimensional game engine for the first time in the series contributed to GTA III's positive reception upon its release and became 2001's top selling video game. GTA III's success was a significant factor in the series' subsequent popularity; as of 2006, five GTA prequels set before events in GTA III have been released. GTA III's violent and sexual contents have also been the source of moral panic and controversy.

Grand Theft Auto III takes place in Liberty City, a fictional city on the East Coast (based on New York City and eastern New Jersey). The timeline of the game was intended to be set at the present time around the first release of GTA III, October 22, 2001; this was indicated by the Liberty Tree website, which included plot points that connect to events in the beginning of the game, in its last existing monthly entry, dated October 18, 2001.[7]

Throughout the story, the protagonist and player character is never named (though he is referred to by several in game characters as "Fido" or "The Kid"). The player character is also a silent protagonist, never uttering a single word.

Hitman: Blood Money

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/HitmanBloodMoney/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

47 finally comes to the U.S to escape danger in Europe from a rival assassination agency. It is the third 3D game in the Grand Theft Auto video game franchise and fifth original game overall. Originally released for the PlayStation 2 in October 2004, the game has since been ported to the Xbox and Microsoft Windows, and has received wide acclaim and high sales figures on all three platforms.

Set in 1992, the game revolves around the main character, Carl "CJ" Johnson returning home to Los Santos after learning of his mother's murder. CJ finds his family and his old gang, the Grove Street Families, in disarray. Over the course of the game, CJ gradually unravels the plot behind his mother's murder while working to reestablish his gang and exploring his own business ventures.

Much like the previous entries in the Grand Theft Auto series, San Andreas's critical and commercial success has not been without controversy; hidden content in the game resulted in the game's re-rating and subsequent removal from many retailers' shelves.

San Andreas is structured similarly to the previous two games in the series. The core gameplay consists of elements of a third-person shooter and a driving game, affording the player a large, open environment to move around in. On foot, the player's character is capable of walking, running, swimming, climbing and jumping, as well as utilizing weapons and basic hand to hand combat. Players can steal and drive a variety of vehicles, including automobiles, boats, airplanes, helicopters, trains, and motorcycles.

The open, non-linear environment allows players to explore and choose how they wish to play the game. Although storyline missions are necessary to progress through the game and unlock certain cities and content, they are not required, as players can complete them at their own leisure. When not taking on a storyline mission, players can free-roam and create havoc (e.g. drive-by shootings, robberies, etc). However, doing so can attract unwanted and potentially fatal attention from the authorities. The more chaos caused, the stronger the response: police will handle minor infractions, whereas SWAT teams, the FBI, and the military respond to higher wanted levels.

The player can also partake in a variety of optional side missions. The traditional side missions of the past games are included, such as dropping off taxi cab passengers, putting out fires, driving injured people to the hospital, and fighting crime as a vigilante. New additions include truck and train driving missions requiring players to make deliveries on time, and driving/flying/boating/biking schools, which help players learn skills and techniques to use in their corresponding vehicles.

Halo 2

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/halo2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Halo 2 is a first-person shooter video game developed by Bungie Studios. The game is set in fictional Vice City, which is based on Miami, Florida. The game's look, particularly the clothing and vehicles, reflect (and sometimes gently parody) its 1986 setting (with the packaging and artwork in particular owing a great debt to 1980s artist Patrick Nagel). In contrast to the gritty urbanism of Grand Theft Auto III's Liberty City, Vice City appears (mostly) clean and upscale, with golden beaches, waving palm trees, and vivid purple sunsets.

The player takes the role of Tommy Vercetti, who has recently been released from prison in Liberty City. While attempting to re-establish himself within the Forelli Mafia family, boss Sonny Forelli sends Tommy to Vice City to supervise an important drug deal. At the exchange, masked gunmen kill three of the people involved in the trade (two Forelli henchmen and Victor Vance, Lance Vance's brother), stealing both the drugs and the money Tommy was charged with protecting. Vercetti narrowly escapes and informs Sonny, who demands that Tommy get back both the "product" and the money. Both Sonny and Tommy wish to kill those responsible for the theft.

Much of the action in Vice City concerns Vercetti's burgeoning criminal empire, spanning drug trafficking, contract killings, counterfeiting, and protection. The player progresses through the game narrative by performing a series of missions, most of which involve criminal activities. This takes Vercetti from being a small-time hood staying in a beachfront hotel to being the city's crime kingpin, but Sonny is looming over Tommy until he finally comes down to get his stuff personally. And in a shootout similar to that of the ending of the Brian De Palma film Scarface, Tommy Vercetti kills Sonny Forelli and his traitorous partner Lance Vance.

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/Hitman2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

AFter the events in the first game 47 quits the Agency and retreats to a life of solitute as a gardener for a church in Italy. Imagine a world where every choice and action determines what you become. Where you evolve in real time based on every little thing you do. Fable is an RPG action adventure unlike any you've ever dreamed of. And now more than ever - with extra quests, additional customization, and extended content - your destiny is yours to choose!
Evolve in Real Time - Your decisions make you a hero, villain, or anything in between. Your actions determine how you look and how others react to you.

Expanded Content - Discover additional regions, storylines, and side quests as well as new optional missions.

Fable is designed to offer pure, concentrated role-playing, with a primary emphasis on open character development and influential interaction with the game world. The game begins as the player's character enters the fantasy land of Albion, a growing, interactive environment that develops and changes with each new event. The character grows and changes as well, beginning the adventure as a youth but slowly aging as he or she lives life in Albion, gaining wrinkled skin, graying hair, and (hopefully) becoming quite elderly by the end of the story.

The game is designed such that every choice and action the character makes can have an effect on his or her development. Physically active characters become more fit, while those who spend their time studying the arcane arts may develop receding hairlines. Characters who spend time working in the hot sun will get a tan and individual wounds heal into distinct, telling scars. Less tangible characteristics mature according to behavior as well. Players are free to commit nearly any conceivable action, but acts of cruelty will lead to vilification by NPC townsfolk, while noble and altruistic deeds may inspire loyalty and adulation from the masses.

It is important to note that instead of focusing on a limited number of scripted "good versus evil" plot points, character development in this game occurs mostly through hundreds of minor day-to-day decisions that gradually come to define and refine the player's place in the game world. In short, !Xbox gamers are offered a virtual lifetime of choices to play through. Fable is developed by Big Blue Box, an affiliate of Lionhead Studios, whose popular Black White shares the theme of free-form, consequential character development over a broad span of time. This installment features all of the action and features made popular by previous installments, and also introduces an "Edit Mode" which allows players to create new officers and bodyguard units. The game also features Kaede, an expert female ninja who provides Samanosuke with information. Kaede was originally sent to assassinate Samanosuke by the Iga clan of ninja, but had a change of heart and develops trust and deep feelings of love (as shown in Onimusha Blade Warriors) for the samurai and agrees to join him as his confidant. Samansosuke travels throughout all of Inabayama Castle where he searches for clues of Princess Yuki's whereabouts, finds special weapons, and solves various puzzles.

Batman Vengeance

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/batmanvengeance/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Batman Vengeance is a video game in the Batman universe developed and published by Ubisoft. It was released over a period of time on all of the major platforms, starting with the PS2 version on October 15, 2001 and ending with the PC version a year later on October 8, 2002. The game is based on the animated series The New Batman Adventures, which in turn is an expansion of Batman: the Animated Series. Spanning 5 episodes, presented in a style intended to emulate that of the animated series, Batman Vengeance takes the Caped Crusader through 19 levels of gameplay up against a series of familiar villains unknowingly involved with one central plot to wreak havoc on Gotham City. Presented in a more stylized golden age comic book appearance that communicates attitude and personality through deceptively Spartan artwork, Batman engages in a variety of different gameplay modes (e.g. traditional third-person platforming and vehicle-based gameplay) in his pursuit to rid Gotham City of its most notorious criminals.

It starred Kevin Conroy as the role of Batman. He reprised it from the successful animated TV show as did Mark Hamill, who voiced the criminally insane Joker.

In Batman Vengeance, the gritty underworld of Gotham ignites as Batman becomes the target of a nerve-rattling conspiracy. After the Joker plummets to his death in an attempt to kill Batman, Gotham's criminals quickly escalate their schemes to gain power. Batman discovers subtle links in these seemingly unrelated crimes, but is forced undercover after being framed for an attack on Commissioner Gordon. Hunted by the police, the Dark Knight must pinpoint the unseen enemy weaving this sinister web before Gotham City falls to a fiery demise.

Hitman: Contracts

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/hitmancontracts/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Contracts was the third game in the series. It is considered to be Street Fighter's "cousin", and the two series are set in the same universe (characters like Guy, Hugo Andore, Rolento, Cody Travers and Poison have all appeared in later Street Fighter installments). Final Fight was originally released as an arcade game and was ported to several platforms, including the Super NES, Sega Mega-CD, Sharp X68000 and Game Boy Advance. It features former wrestler (as seen in Saturday Night Slam Masters), and mayor of Metro City (Capcom's fictitious city, modeled after New York City), Mike Haggar.

The story of Final Fight involves the abduction of Haggar's daughter, Jessica, because he would not work with Mad Gear to ensure their dominance of the streets. When the Mad Gear thug Damnd contacts Haggar and informs him, Haggar calls up his daughter's boyfriend Cody and his sparring partner Guy, and the three vigilantes head into the streets to bust Mad Gear's skulls, fighting their way through the hordes of goons littering the city (including the Rastafarian thug Damnd, the "Japanophile" Sodom, former Red Beret and militia leader Rolento, corrupt cop Edi. E, and the ill-tempered Abigail), to get to Mad Gear's boss, Belger.

Final Fight, whilst following in the footsteps of Double Dragon, was an innovative and balanced game. Unlike several beat 'em ups before it, Final Fight featured very large and detailed sprites for its day, and the controls were quite fluid and simple. Beginners could take to the game quickly, yet the game was balanced and difficult enough to ensure even experts could always expect a challenge for every new play. The game also began the strength-based, speed-based, and average character variety that countless other beat 'em up and other genres derived, as one controls Haggar (very powerful yet very slow and vulnerable to attack), Guy (very agile and can use hit-and-run, yet has weak offensive power), or Cody (who balances strength and speed, being an excellent choice for beginners). It also featured very long levels and various powerful enemies that could easily crowd the screen and had several fighting tactics against the player. It was not uncommon to hear people talk of how crowds would gather to watch whoever was playing the machine at the time.

MDK2

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/MDK2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

MDK2, the sequel to Shiny Entertainment’s 1997 hit, take on the roles of Max, Dr. Hawkins, and Kurt Hectic as you fight to save the world from an alien threat. The game is moulded in the Survival-Horror style with a bent towards action and is viewed in the third-person.

After the events of the film and the apparent destruction of the U.S research base in Antarctica, a military rescue team is sent in to investigate the area and seek out any survivors. Throughout the game the player learns of the fate of the previous inhabitants and of the virus which caused those horrific events.
Paranoia plays a major part in gameplay dynamics as well as in the film as potentially anybody could be infected with the strange virus. Team-mates are prone to being spooked when certain events occur and Blake must try to calm them by either giving them weapons and ammo, stimulants or more importantly by testing each other for the virus. A limited amount of testing kits can be found scattered around the place and allow the team to determine whether or not they are infected - leading to trust gained if clean, and lots of blood and death if not...

Stubbs the Zombie

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/stubbs/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

In this game, players take on the role of the rebel himself, Stubbs, a wisecracking Zombie who takes on an ultra-modern city of the future using nothing but his own carcass and the weapons of his possessed enemies. You start as a volunteer in WWII fighting with the british and French, then move on to other campaigns of the war such as Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Normandy (D-Day), North Africa, and even a bombing raid on Tokyo. It's more of an arcade type game, with in air repairs, unlimited ammo, and simple commands, but it's fun and challenging, and there's plenty of unlocks through the campaign and even in arcade mode, and Ace Duels with AI opponents in the same type of aircraft you're flying.
The Mutiplayer is where this game shines with several modes like Co-op, and duels, or simplay to see who can down the most aircraft. It's a fun title, but don't buy it new. It is a collaboration between the film's director Peter Jackson and famed videogame designer Michel Ancel (Rayman, Beyond Good & Evil), remarkable in that such true cross-medium creative partnerships are rare in the realm of game development.

In Peter Jackson's King Kong, the player assumes the roles of both New York playwright Jack Driscoll and the giant ape King Kong as they struggle to survive on Skull Island.

This game is exhibitive of an industry trend to de-emphasize the role of Heads-Up Displays: it lacks a life bar and ammunition readout (the ammo readout could be enabled), which makes the game more realistic. The player must rely on subtle onscreen and vocal cues from Jack instead. During the majority of the game the player is tasked with controlling Jack Driscoll in a first person view, a character given a realistic amount of health and equipped with largely ineffectual weaponry, further adding to the challenge and encouraging the player to find alternate weapons and techniques.

Interspersed with Driscoll's adventure are levels in which the player controls King Kong himself, battling various giant monsters in defense of Ann. The Kong levels take place in a third person view, as the player directs Kong to punch, grab and use objects and certain dead creatures as weapons, bite, throw objects and creatures, charge, climb, and even pound his chest to go into fury mode, a powerful mode in which the sky becomes a golden hue and Kong becomes more powerful, faster and less vulnerable to attacks. Many of the Kong sequences fulfill the role of boss fights, as the giant ape is able to effectively battle the gigantic V-Rexes that Jack's weapons cannot harm.

Crash Twinsanity

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/CrashTwinsanity/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Crash Twinsanity is the fifth platform game in the Crash Bandicoot series. It was released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox.

Two purple birds called the Wicked Twins form a new threat to Crash's homeworld. Crash has to team up with his arch rival Dr. Neo Cortex to put a stop to this new threat.

Crash Twinsanity is a classic-style Crash platform game, though this time Crash has to work together with Dr. Cortex from time to time. Crash can pick up and throw Dr. Cortex to places he can't reach himself, or use him as a hammer to slap enemies. The consistent conflict between both heroes causes many situations.

25 To Life

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/25-To-Life/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Self-appointed game censor Jack Thompson said,
"I have received word in the last two days from a credible source that Eidos has decided never to release 25 to Life."
