Since then it has won numerous awards and received much acclaim. At the time, it was one of the biggest and most detailed games available. It took full advantage of the new CD-ROM format with full voice digitization including voicing done by Patrick Stewart portraying King Richard.

The game interface is superbly done, by far the easiest and smoothest I have ever played. Many RPGs tend to have complicated interfaces that take hours of learning to master. But not here, simply click on the sword or magic symbol to use it. Other features include a compass, and a very nice auto-mapper which is a necessity in such a huge world.

Unlike some RPGs, Lands of Lore places more emphasis on adventure and less on the complexities of character and party selection. This allows you to be able to get into the game quickly without squabbling over the unnecessary details in some games, like the color of your pants.

Chrono Trigger

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/chronotrigger/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

The 32-meg Chrono Trigger utilizes time travel, science-fiction, and fantasy adventure to create one of the best role-playing games ever. The integral time travel element of the game enables players to alter the game by changing the past, give players multiple endings and excellent repeat game play value. The fine soundtrack is but one of the seminal areas of inspiration;in fact, a majority of the most prominent Zelda themes -such as Zelda's Lullaby and Kakariko Village tunes; even the name entry music-were directly lifted from A link to the past's musical score.
Between the environmentally based dungeons, two distinct realms, hookshot and punt-able chickens, it's clear to see that the original Legend of Zelda merely provided the canvas and a rough sketch of the series whereas A Link to the Past served as a the charcoal and oil paints.

Garry's Mod is a sandbox mod for the Source Engine. Unlike normal games there aren't any predefined aims or goals. Players are given tools and are left to entertain themselves.

The player is in a world where objects can be created and destroyed on demand. Where people can be created and destroyed with the click of a mouse. A world made for him. A world he made.

So what do you do?

There are a lot of things you can do with Garry's Mod, but here's a few of the more common uses.

Construction

Garry's Mod provides tools to constrain objects together in various ways. Using these tools the player can create working contraptions.

The simplest example is a car. The player spawns an object to be used for the car's body then adds wheels by firing the tool gunat the object. Wheels are then controllable using the numpad on your keyboard.

You don't have to make moving contraptions though - want to build a fort out of wooden crates then set it on fire? Go for it! Want to build a house using fridges for the walls and mattresses for the ceiling then drive a jeep into it all? Go for it!

Posing and Comics

One of the universal appeals of Garry's Mod has been the ability to place and pose ragdolls. This allows you to create your own comic books and share them online. One major comic spawned from this is HLComic - the story of Gordon Frohman's journey in City 17.

Garry's Mod gives you the ability to place ragdolls, manipulate their facial expressions and aim their eyes.

Gamemodes

Garry's Mod gives the ability to program your own gamemodes (Don't worry - you don't need to be a programmer to play them). This allows the community to make new, often wacky, gamemodes such as melon racing, build to the top and so on.

It's often worth taking a look in the server list to see if any of the games prick your attention - there's often something weird there to try out.

User Created Content

Garry's Mod benefits greatly from a thriving community which is constantly churning out new ideas, maps, models, gamemodes, weapons, Lua scripts and skins.

Despite selling only 650,000 copies worldwide, Ico received strong reviews, and has become a cult hit among video game enthusiasts.

Ico is noted for its highly individual artistic style. Key factors contributing to the game's absorbing atmosphere include the absence of any HUD; a bleak and washed-out use of color; low key use of in-game music, played only in selected scenes of the game; and atmospheric, ambient sound effects in the background. It makes effective use of minimal dialogue and story to forge strong emotional connections with the characters and environments in the game. It includes action, adventure and puzzle elements. The game also has a notable fictional language which has been theorized to be backwards Japanese.

Unreal Tournament 3

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/Unreal3/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

The Necris invasion has begun, and your clan was one of the first to be slaughtered. Its concept, scope, and development philosophy (broad use of procedural generation) has drawn wide attention.

Spore is, at first glance, a "teleological evolution" game or god game: the player molds and guides a species across many generations, growing it from a single-celled organism into a more complex animal, until the species becomes intelligent. At this point the player begins molding and guiding this species' society, progressing towards a spacefaring civilization. Spore's main innovation is the use of procedural generation for many of the components of the game, providing vast scope and open-endedness. Wright said "I didn't want to make players feel like Luke Skywalker or Frodo Baggins. I wanted them to be like George Lucas or J.R.R. The guitar features five buttons on the fretboard and a plastic button that can be tapped up or down where the strings would be strummed. Playing the songs here is simply a matter of holding down the right fret buttons and tapping the strum button in time with the music. This is all done along with the commands that scroll down the screen in an interface that's very similar to that seen in Frequency or Amplitude. Gameplay is simple: there are five lines on the screen for the five different buttons. Markers scroll down the lines and as they hit the bottom of the screen the corresponding "notes" need to be hit. It was co-developed by Saffire and Blizzard Entertainment.
The expansion pack introduced new campaigns and two additional units for each race, new tech advancements, new map tilesets, and new music. You are a tiny prince charged with the task of rebuilding the majority of the solar system, which was recently destroyed by the King of All Cosmos while apparently on a drunken rampage. To accomplish this goal, you must gather enough material on Earth to replace each celestial body in turn. And the best way to gather material is by rolling it up, of course, in a wondrous ball called a "katamari" that happens to adhere to any object smaller than it.

Katamari Damacy runs through a series of time-constrained levels in which you must increase the size of your katamari to a predetermined diameter by rolling up as much as possible, as quickly as possible. Since you can only roll up objects smaller than yourself, the challenge comes in finding progressively larger items to roll up--but that are not too large. Katamari roll control is simple and done using only the analog sticks. The scale of the katamari varies immensely, and so do the areas of the world available to explore in parallel. You may find yourself picking thumbtacks up off the floor, only to later be ripping the very house off its foundation.

In addition to its unique gameplay, the quirky humor and stylized graphics lend themselves nicely towards Katamari Damacy's distinctive flavor. The King of All Cosmos serves the role of jovial narrator as he guides the prince through the game, but is a strict and demanding father, and will quickly turn on you should you fail a level. All the while he refers to himself using the "royal we," and speaks with a record-scratching sound effect. The game world itself features intentionally blocky and Lego-esque graphics, and is filled with a variety of whacky denizens who may attack your katamari or run from it, screaming for their lives. With a style as original as any, Katamari Damacy has rolled up the favor of gamers everywhere.

Mega Man X

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/megamanx/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Mega Man X, released in 1993 by Capcom, is the first game in the Mega Man X series. The first subseries of the popular Mega Man series, it was made primarily as a stepping stone between the NES and SNES incarnations of the original series. In Japan, it is titled Rock Man X. It was released on the SNES first, then ported to the PC in 1995. The game was remade in 2006 as Mega Man Maverick Hunter X (Irregular Hunter X in Japan), for the PlayStation Portable.

The Mega Man series has always been an action game that focuses on "run-and-gun" gameplay. The player takes control of Mega Man X ("X" for short), a Maverick Hunter who seeks to stop Sigma's rebellion against humans. After an introductory stage, the player is presented with a stage selection screen that depicts eight Maverick boss characters.

After the player selects a Maverick to battle, X is teleported into the Maverick's base of operations. The player must dodge obstacles, destroy enemies and other hazards, and keep their life bar as high as possible. Defeating a stage and its boss Maverick rewards X with the boss's weapon, which can be used in a rock-paper-scissors fashion to defeat other boss characters. This mechanic is carried over from the Mega Man Classic series; Capcom maintained the tradition throughout the new series, with a few twists. In the X series, completing a stage may affect the environment of other stages, possibly making them easier or more hazardous.

Slaves to Armok II: Dwarf Fortress

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/dwarffortress/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Dwarf Fortress is a single-player fantasy game. Constantly taunted and hunted by the AI SHODAN, the player must counter SHODAN's attempts to destroy human life on Earth.

System Shock went on to receive critical acclaim and garnered awards in the adventure genre, despite its mediocre commercial performance. The game's legacy influences game development to this day.
