Its fast pace and vivid environments set it apart, and it went on to become a phenomenon, being by far the biggest-selling game on all three platforms. To date, Sonic games have sold in excess of 44 million copies worldwide, placing him ninth in the franchise sales table. The main game brought in Knuckles as a main, playable character with his own unique set of moves, while keeping Sonic fresh on his adventure to beat Dr. Robotnik.

For Sonic, the game play was still the same as his previous games where speed was his biggest element as he would blaze through the levels in no time. Tails was still his trusty sidekick though and able to give him a lift every now and then. It was even easier if you could get a 2nd player to take control of the two-tailed fox. Knuckles was fast, but his advantage was in his ability to glide across the stage, latch onto walls, and bust through rocks that Sonic cannot.

The cartridge could connect with cartidges of the previous 2 Sonic games, and allowed for special features never unlockable before. Having Sonic 2 or 3 attached would allow you to play through the entire game as Knuckles, which was never an option before. Doing so allowed you to explore the game worlds in a way Sonic never could, and made those titles instantly replayable by getting to take control of Knuckles.

Not only Knuckles, but even Tails got a great new chance to shine. Though he wasn't a main playable character in the main game, when attached to Sonic 3 you could take control of just him and soar through the levels as long as his tails could carry him.

Sonic and the Secret Rings

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/sonicandthesecretrings/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Sonic brings his trademark speed and attitude to the Nintendo Wii in his first solo adventure since 1991. In Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic finds himself in the colorful and vibrant world of the Arabian Nights tales. There he embarks on his most outrageous journey to date through an expansive 3D world brought to life with realistic water reflections, light bloom, and lifelike physics.
The mystical world within the story of the Arabian Nights is being erased by an evil genie, the Erazor Djinn. The latest chapter talks of a blue hedgehog from another world coming to save the vanishing world. With help from Shahra, the genie of the ring, Sonic embarks on a new adventure to save not only the world of the book, but also to save himself, his very life force burning away after an attack from Erazor. Dr Eggman/Robotnik is at it again, attempting to take over the world with his army of robots (each one containing one of Sonic's captured friends as before), a deadly new weapon, the Death Egg and now he just needs the seven Chaos Emeralds to complete his plan. Naturally, Sonic simply can't stand by and let this happen, so he goes after the Doctor again, with Tails in tow to retrieve the Emeralds and put a stop to Robotnik's plan.
Sonic 2's gameplay is vastly similar to that of Sonic's previous adventure, a simple run and jump play-style while still maintaining the speed aspects of Sonic 1. It also introduced new opportunities of play with the introduction of Tails, such as the memorable Sky Chase Zone and the fact that Tails could spin his trademark twin-tails and fly, though players were not given control of Tails' unique ability until Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994). Sonic 2 also deviated from the rotating maze-style Special Zone of Sonic 1 and introduced a half-pipe style Special Zone where the player can retrieve a Chaos Emerald, a format still used in modern Sonic games such as Sonic Heroes. And this was the also the first that really introduced an incentive for collecting the Emeralds; Only when you had all of the Emeralds could you see the real ending (as in Sonic 1) AND transform into Super Sonic who was much faster and invincible as long as you kept collecting those rings. It was also the first Sonic game to introduce a multiplayer mode, where you could either race a friend in split-screen mode, or your friend could jump into the main adventure and control Tails any time.
Sonic 2 is well-renowned among gamers in general and Sonic-fans and is still regarded by many as a classic component of the early 90's gaming scene and some still refer to it as the greatest Sonic game to date.

Sonic Adventure

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/SonicAdventure/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Centuries ago, the Gods bestowed upon the planet seven Chaos Emeralds. These emeralds were a source of absolute power. However, absolute power corrupts absolutely — and it did not take long before wars broke out over who would control the Chaos Emeralds' seemingly unlimited power. This angered the Gods, and so, they created one singular Master Emerald, which held powers that could control and neutralize the Chaos Emeralds. And with the Master Emerald, came a guardian spirit. It is said that a single tribe of Echidnas angered the spirit by attempting to steal the Chaos Emeralds and ruining the sanctuary it was protecting. They were all but completely destroyed within a single night, and the guardian spirit was never seen again. The monster was then named "Chaos," the God of Destruction.

In the present day, the nefarious Doctor Robotnik learns of the legend surrounding Chaos. Believing it to be true, he seeks out the Master Emerald and shatters it, freeing Chaos in the process. Dr. Robotnik's goal is to control Chaos, and use its destructive powers to conquer the world. When Sonic the Hedgehog learns of this, he and his friends spring in to action to stop Eggman — but none of them know the whole story behind Chaos and his entrapment within the Master Emerald. Slowly, through many visits from an Echidna spirit named Tikal, they learn that she had befriended Chaos, and that night: when the Echidna tribe attempted to take the Chaos Emeralds, she sealed both herself and Chaos within the Master Emerald to ensure Chaos would not destroy the world with his rage. Now that Chaos has been freed, Tikal begs Sonic to seal him in the Master Emerald once again. Sonic disagrees — being trapped within the Master Emerald will not stop Chaos' rage, it will just fuel it. Using the power of the Chaos Emeralds to become Super Sonic, Sonic fights Chaos, and Chaos is defeated — his rage neutralized by the overwhelming power of virtue. With the world saved, Tikal and Chaos depart for parts unknown.

Sonic Adventure 2

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/SonicAdventure2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Gameplay takes place between two parallel storylines; the player has the option of advancing in either one or the other at any time. The "Hero" story featuring Sonic, Knuckles, Tails and the non-playable Amy, while the "Dark" story featuring Shadow, Rouge (she isn't really dark: she is a secret agent for the president, and she is on a mission ), and Dr. Eggman play similar to each other, with each hero character playing similar to the respective dark character. Levels advance in order for each storyline, alternating between each of the playable characters.

Levels featuring Sonic or Shadow are designed much the same as they were in Sonic Adventure,[1] wherein the player's primary objective is simply to get to the end of the level. Levels with Tails or Dr. Eggman allow the player to control a mechanized robot walker and generally blast their way through to the end of the stage. Knuckles and Rouge are required to scour their levels for shards of the master emerald. Interspersed between the levels are various bosses, which one particular character must fight.

At the end of each stage the player is given a score and rank based on performance. Similar to school grades, you're ranked with a grade of A, B, C, D, or E (with A being the highest and E being the lowest).

Sonic The Hedgehog 3

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/Sonic3/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

The storyline picks up shortly after the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Dr. Robotnik's[1] space station, the Death Egg, has fallen out of orbit after his mech suit exploded in his final showdown with Sonic, causing critical damage to the ship.
However, instead of impacting the planet, the Death Egg crash-landed on Angel Island[2][3], a mystical floating landmass previously believed to exist only in legend. As Dr. Robotnik repairs the ship he meets up with the Island’s sole inhabitant, Knuckles the Echidna. Knuckles is the last surviving member of an ancient civilization, whose ruins and relics are scattered throughout the island. He is also the guardian of a set of Chaos Emeralds, which are the source of the island’s levitation powers.

Knowing Sonic and Tails will try to track him down, and realizing he can use the Chaos Emeralds to power the ship, Robotnik deceives Knuckles into believing Sonic is trying to steal his emeralds, and he’s come to help him. After being lost for millennia, the weapon, called a Gizoid, was unearthed and researched by Prof. Gerald Robotnik. It remained dormant for another half century before being discovered by, of all people, resident would-be ruler of the world and Gerald's grandson, Dr. Eggman. Frustrated at his inability to get the dormant Gizoid to work properly, Eggman dumped the contraption at Emerald Beach... where it was discovered once again, this time by planet's resident hero, Sonic the Hedgehog.

The Gizoid, which Sonic dubs Emerl, gets wrapped up in the affairs of Sonic's friends, allies and rivals. Through his encounters with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Cream, Rouge, and Shadow, Emerl grows and evolves from a soulless robot into a fun-loving mech with personality traits from all of the above. But while the gang is having fun raising their new mechanical toy, there are those who recognize Emerl's true power. Now that the Gizoid is working again, Eggman's got his eye on it, Rouge wants to turn it into a master thief, and Shadow senses that, despite their efforts to humanize him, Emerl is still designed and programmed to be a weapon of mass destruction...

Sonic Advance 3

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/SonicAdventure3/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Sonic Advance 3 is a platform game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, developed by Dimps and published by THQ for the Game Boy Advance. While technically is a title in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, his inclusion on the game looks more of an afterthought, since other than his sprite, there is little that relates the game with the rest of the franchise.
Since the Meganet modem never achieved widespread noterity, Sonic Eraser became a "long-lost" Sonic game, i.e. the most unnoticed Sonic game ever among English-speaking audiences until February 2004, when Eric Robert Gray (also known as Pachuka and Reala), the owner of the Sonic Cult website, got a hold of the ROM through SEGA's Japan-only download service.
The game is a fairly simple puzzle game. In the versus mode of this game, when a player gets a combination of three consecutive lineups of pieces, that player's Sonic attacks the other player's Sonic. The other player momentairly loses control of his pieces.
The game is on Sega's B-Club download service.

Gameplay Modes

The game offers 4 unique modes of gameplay.

Round Mode: This is sort of a puzzle mode consisting of 10 stages. Each round has a bunch of whirlybob ring shapes interspersed with other normal shapes. Just like the other shapes, the whirlybobs disappear when paired. The object is to clear them all from the playfield by eliminating the shapes between them. The time limit is 3 minutes for each round, and keep in mind that pausing the game doesn't stop the clock, so you'd better remember to go before you start. If you've blown the round (i.e. if you're stuck with only 1 whirlybob left), press A and C simultaneously to end the round.

Normal Mode: This is just the standard low-pressure game. Play for points as long as you like. The better you perform, the higher your level will rise. As you climb the ladder, the speed at which clusters fall increases.

Doubt Mode: The rules are normal except that white squares will never fall. Instead, a single shape from almost every cluster will turn into a white square when it hits the ground.

* Block Mode: This mode defies all Newtonian physics by having clusters stand on-end. Stack 'em up as high as you dare for massive chain reactions. It only takes a single pair to send the whole tower tumbling.

ChuChu Rocket!

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/chuchurocket/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

<img style="float: left; clear: left;" src="http://static.greatgamesexperiment.com/userimages/e/ec889ed0105c53b3c51dd24caa074fef_sq.jpg" title="ChuChu Rocket! Using the Doom engine, this game is a great game keeping the true feel of the classic Sonic the Hedgehog games, while moving into three dimensions. Its gameplay includes most of the gameplay modes of Doom (with ring-throwing in match mode), and co-op play with Sonic and friends.

Sonic Rivals 2

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/sonicrivals2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/sonicriders2/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss
