Players took the role of Corvus, an Elven hero whose race was nearly eliminated by a horde of evil monsters from another dimension. The first episode of Heretic was released as Shareware as a precursor to the full version of the game, Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders.<br />

Heretic won several awards for excellence, appeared in such notable publications as USA Today and Playboy, and opened many new doors in the computer gaming software industry for Raven Software and its team of developers. HeXen was developed over a period of 8 months, published by Id Software and distributed by GT Interactive in 1995. The game introduced the 3-D gaming world to the &quot;hub system&quot; of level progression, rotating polygonal brushes and multiple character classes that were available in both single player and multiplayer. All of this combined to help HeXen raise the bar for the first-person shooter genre. HeXen pushed Id Software's DooM engine to its absolute limits and surpassed Heretic as Raven Software's most popular, highly acclaimed title.<br />

After that it's all about revenge, and surviving the roughest parts of a gritty urban environment that has elements of a historical past, but never quite existed.<br />

As you work your way up you win the respect of those you need to help you, as well as do what it takes to acquire the wealth needed to keep rising through the ranks until you're the top dog.  Among other things, cash is useful at the &quot;pawn-o-matic&quot; found in each chapter as a means to purchase weapons and ammunition.<br />

The game is bloody, vulgar and relentlessly violent, and has received criticism over this. When installing, you can opt for a reduced level of violence and swearing, although that seems contrary to the inevitable objectives of the game.<br />

<span style="color: blue;">The game features</span> nine deadly weapons ranging from lead pipes and pistols to grenade launchers, bazookas and flamethrowers. Multi-player support is provided for both LAN and Internet and offers customizable pre-game options such as time limits, flag limits (maximum death toll) and a cash limit. Up to 16 players can bully and bludgeon their way through an online game at any given time.<br />

Also featured are soundtrack music by Cypress Hill, clever level layouts, an intuitive and fully customizable gui, &quot;area specific damage&quot; to characters, blood, and a gritty, urban ghetto feel through carefully crafted and performed dialogue, sound effects and the artful use of haze and custom textures to achieve the best possible looks the Quake 2 engine could produce at that time.<br />

Fly around the level and collect Vol power-ups (look for -=V=- on screen), which increase your abilities to shoot, fly, zoom in, and move. After collecting enough Vol power-ups you will reach an ascended state called &quot;True-Vol&quot;.  With this new acquired label comes the ability to annihilate your opponents with an incredible rate of fire, great vision, and speed. Every time you &quot;ice&quot; an opponent you get one point.  However, if you are &quot;iced&quot; by an opponent you lose one point, but don't worry, you can't get negative points!<br />
You begin the game with 200 experience points.  After a few games you will have gained more experience points, which you can use to create your own techniques.  During gameplay you can use your techniques by first placing your target box on an opponent at least for a moment.  Once you have seen their name pop up that means they are the target which your techniques will home in on unless someone has the homing virus (or you clear your technique's target by pressing zoom-in and zoom-out simultaneously).  Enter the Button Sequence of the Technique you want to use and it will fire toward the last targeted opponent.  You can also target opponent's special techniques and destroy them before they hit you.  Simply target one (it will say &quot;(Playername's) Special Technique&quot;) then fire off your own technique. The game features a large number of weapons, a large number of playable characters, with alternate skins, and a large number of arenas to play in. Besides several multiplayer modes, the game offers a single-player game which consists of several bouts linked together versus bots. <br />
<br />
The game is set apart by other arena based first-person shooters by focusing on tactical-based combat with four players in small levels. The game is also unique in the way that you choose your weapons before the match, all you need is to collect ammo in order to use your chosen weapons. You are allowed two bullet weapons, two energy weapons, and one explosive weapon. The player is also given a warhammer that does not consume ammunition. <br />
<br />
All of the games playable characters are humanoid except for two, the raptor, and the mites. The raptor and mites do not use weapons, instead they use their claws for melee attacks. The mites also have a poison spitting ability. <br />
<br />
The game has a few picksup available for the player, deployable auto-turrets, mines, the Cerebral Bore, and bear traps. A powercore can also be picked up at a designated location which gives the player one of many randomly picked abilities, invulnerability, slow-time, life leech, weapon resistances, regeneration, and teleport, among others. <br />
<br />
Rage Wars has 50 medals that are earned through playing multiplayer matches, except for 4 of them awarded for defeating bosses in single player. Medals exist for killing sprees, large numbers of kills, deaths, suicides, strict usage of certain weapons, and so forth.<br />
<br />
Unique weapons in the game include the Boomerang, the Emaciator and Inflator, the Chest Burster, which has the ability to spawn an alien from a player's chest causing instant death, the Flare Gun, and the Napalm Gel launcher.
