Gamers who have played modern online role-playing games, or almost any computer role-playing game, or who have at any time installed or upgraded their operating system, will find themselves incredibly comfortable with Progress Quest's very familiar gameplay.

Progress Quest follows reverently in the footsteps of recent smash hit online worlds, but is careful to streamline the more tedious aspects of those offerings. Players will still have the satisfaction of building their character from a ninety-pound level 1 teenager, to an incredibly puissant, magically imbued warrior, well able to snuff out the lives of a barnload of bugbears without need of so much as a lunch break. Yet, gone are the tedious micromanagement and other frustrations common to that older generation of RPG's.

Rise of the Dragon

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/rotd/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

A futuristic adventure game that borrows graphical elements from Blade Runner (in fact, the title character's name is "Blade Hunter").
From the Journals of Doctor Carter

"Something is terribly wrong with Seahorse Island.

It's about a thirty suns now since the crops and trees began to wither and die. It has been raining for what seems like an eternity, but the rain does nothing to nourish the soil. The leaves have been gone from the trees outside my office for many suns now. The trees look like twisted corpses. I don't recall ever seeing such a sight as I do now as I write this.

Farmer Haywood has stockpiled the remaining grain, and has begun rationing it to the town. It should last us a while, but what then?

Mr. Clancy came to visit me today. He is looking for a woman--an "evil and manipulative creature" is how he put it--a mainlander spy, incredibly dangerous, and should I see or hear word of her I should report to him immediately.

It may be my imagination but I seem to be seeing a lot of people around town I don't recognise lately. Out of the corner of my eye, just stood in the shadows--watching. The townsfolk seem to pay them no heed, which I find odd given their inherent xenophobic nature -- or (dare I say it?) am I seeing things?
Game Information

The Forgotten Element will be released completely free of charge. This is a labour of love and we have no intention of making money from it. The full game is split as such:

Prologue
Act I
Act II
Act III

The complete three act game will be comparable in length to commercial point-and-clicks, with each part being released as and when they are completed. The prologue will feature approx 1 - 1.5 hours of gameplay.

Once the game is finished, we will also be releasing all plug-ins and ALL art assets so people can use them as they wish in their own games. Our only limitation on their use is that they not be used in commercial games.

Emily Enough

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/emilyenough/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

Emily Enough is a fun, professional-quality "black comedy" adventure game by Logan Worsley that offers a unique setting, an interesting plot (not for the easily disturbed) and cast of characters, good writing, and logical (but easy) puzzles.

Adventure Europe elaborated very well in their review of the game:

The Enough family has arranged a birthday party for little Emily in the Enough estate. Emily is a very demanding girl. When her parents fail to please her insane demands, Emily flips out, grabs a knife and stabs her whole family and their servants! Emily Enough became an instant phenomenon for the media and the journalists called her the kiddie killer. When asked why did she do it, Emily replied: 'I wanted to see what was inside mommy'. The court sentenced Emily to the Claxochem Center for mental wellness institute. This institute however is falling apart. The company that owns it had to go under several budget cuts, resulting in the layoffs of all the institute's personnel. To make things even worse Claxochem moved their offices in the institute!

Emily of course would rather be free so as the game starts you take control of her and your goal is to set her free. There are quite a few characters in the game, many of them are mentally disturbed individuals. All of them are quite interesting to talk to - well...at least those that do talk. Because there are a couple of them that don't. But even they have something special about them. The game's length is short, but not too short. It took me about 4 hours to finish the game, which is quite enough for a freeware adventure game. The end was satisfying and quite funny too. It is quite remarkable how Logan kept a balance between the dark matter of the game and the humor in it. All in all the story is very satisfactory and definitely a couple of notches better than your ordinary freeware adventure game.

Graphics: The graphics of the game although not state-of-the-art (not even for freeware adventure game standards) they do fit the story like a glove! Pale characters and moody-coloured backgrounds provide the player with a mixture that radiates melancholy and insanity at the same time. One thing that could have been improved would be the characters' animation. Most of them were quite stale throughout the game. Some variation on their movements would be a welcome addition to the game.

Gameplay: The interface is similar to the ones used in the Sierra point and click adventures. With the right mouse button you scroll around the possible actions you can perform, which are WALK, LOOK, USE, TALK and Inventory item. The dialogues interface is more similar to the Lucasarts one, where you have a number of choices on the bottom part of the screen that you can choose from. The challenges are quite logical most of the time, although there will be a couple of times where you won't be sure what you have to do next. However, the game world is not that huge so if you explore your surroundings you will be very likely to finish the game without referring to a walkthrough.

Overall: Emily Enough is one of the best freeware adventure games released this year. Due to the somewhat psychotic nature of the story, it is not for everyone, but then again which game is for everyone? If you enjoy black humor and odd stories you should definitely download this game and give it a try.

Your goal is to rid the world of evil toys which appear only at night. You will do this in Arena style combat using your Blaster and Energy sword. To help you along your way, you can equip several types of batteries, each with different combat effects and
bonuses.

This game was developed as an entry to the gamedev.net 4e4 contest which required that it encorporate at least 2 of the following four elements (elements of which ALL games are apparently made of): pirates, ninjas, robots and zombies.

I opted for robots and zombies because robots are easy to model and zombies are easy to animate ^_^

The contest had a 6 month time limit, so I wanted to make sure I didn't bite off more then I could chew. In the end I came in 2nd out of at least 20 - the 1st place finisher was developed by 5 people! so even though I didn't win I felt like the game did very well and the process was rewarding.
Entertainment. Created with Chris Jones' popular freeware Adventure Game Studio, Fatman combines a wacky plot, a wonderful sense of humor, a user-friendly interface, and fun puzzles into a great adventure game that is well worth the $14.95 asking price.

Game review by Home of The Underdogs.

Fatman, who looks like Batman's more obese cousin, is the crime fighter for the city of Shadowlawn. Just when you are complaining about how dull things have been, a supervillain named Toxicman is created from a botched act of corporate sabotage. It is up to you, then, to tear yourself away from food long enough to save the city from certain destruction.

The game plays like a typical point-and-click adventure game. Fans of LucasArts' classic adventures will instantly recognize the interface: commands at the bottom of the screen, next to the inventory window. Puzzles tend to be on the easy side, but there are several more interesting ones that require correct timing. All the puzzles are logical, although there is a few far-fetched ones that seem to be there only for the sake of lengthening the game. While you cannot compare the graphics to commercial releases, the cartoon style is consistent with the game's wacky sense of humor and comic-book-hero premise. Backgrounds are well drawn and animated, and there are few cases of hunt-the-pixel problems (most at the beginning of the game). Bonus points must be given to the cast of voice actors, who did a much better job than numerous commercial CD-ROM games. The designer himself and Francisco Gonzalez are especially outstanding as the voice of Fatman and Toxicman, respectively. In addition to full voice, the CD-ROM also contains funny outtakes, deleted scenes and animations, as well as Pizza Quest, Michael Doak's first game.

Fatman also offers a few features that are not seen in many games. The first is an optional "behind the scene" audio commentary that you can press F12 to listen to from any scene. This is the first time I have seen this feature used in an adventure game, and the effect is a pleasant surprise: it feels similar to listening to the director's commentary on DVD movie, and adds interesting insights into what the designer had in mind as he designed each screen. There are also two gameplay modes: easy and hard. This does not change the puzzles, but the easy mode gives you hints and allow you to retry immediately when you die, so you will not need to save as often.

All in all, The Adventures of Fatman has plenty to offer adventure game fans. Although I wish the game had been longer - I finished it in less than 6 hours - the game kept me entertained from the beginning to end... something that cannot be said for the majority of today's commercial adventure games. Formerly a commercial title (in fact, the very first commercial AGS title), the designer has stopped printing new copies and proclaiming it as "abandonware" in December 2003, so you can get the full game (minus voices) here. Two thumbs up, way up!
The key repeat rate (see Windows -> Control panel) will need to be set fairly high to complete the later portions of the game. The game makes extensive use of the PC Speaker; be aware of this if on a system where such noise is immutable.
Nick primarily moves through a primitive map system, where he will move in one of four directions assuming he is not blocked by a wall. The "Select" button (space bar by default) will allow him to investigate specific areas.
Some scenes involve fighting by moving and using the select button to attack. Nick can hurt any character that is directly next to him.
Originally this game was started as an entry for a Retro Remakes competition.

1213

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/1213/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

A man lies in a darkened cell, consumed by pain and sickness. He does not know where he is. He does not know how he came to be there. He does not even know his own name. All he knows is that he is being tortured by a bizarre, bespectacled man, who addresses him only as a number - Twelve-Thirteen.

Every day, Twelve-Thirteen is taken out of his cell and goaded into running a dangerous hazard course, apparently for the sole amusement of the bespectacled man. Today seems to be no different. But while Twelve-Thirteen sits brooding in his darkened prison, the door suddenly falls open with no apparent cause. To discover the answers to all of his questions, Twelve-Thirteen must adventure into the unknown world beyond the cell...

It plays as an adventure game with a light mix of action thrown in. The health system is an interesting take on a typically HP-saturated market: as you take damage, the beating heart in the corner pumps faster, threatening death, and adding to the atmosphere. With a gripping storyline that far exceeds its meager graphical offerings, you'll find yourself entirely immersed in a game that alternates between terror, confusion, and an overarching ending that will haunt you.

Dead City

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/deadcity/?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=rss

"I've spent like three months...like million years in the madhouse. A trillion suicide attempts. And all the time just bad dreams...dreams about her dead eyes, blood and despair."
